Norton cannot detect external hard drive plugged into the router usb port.

Running Norton 360 6.0.  Had same issue with 5.0  Using windows 7 and trying to install a seagate FreeAgent ext drive in the USB port on a Linksys E3200 router and use it as a network back up device.  The Seagate drive works with Norton when plugged into the USB port on my tower,   And my computer recognizes it when it is plugged into the router.  I can use it like a flash drive.  But when I try to create a Norton backup, my Norton software cannot detect the hard drive plugged into the router.  Is it possible that Norton 360 cannot work with a network drive?

Network drives need to be mapped to a drive letter.  You'll notice thats the difference when using the extenal drive locally.

I'm not in Windows 7 at the moment but I think you need to open "Computer" and then Tools > Map Network Drive.

After it has a letter mapped to it, it will show up as a backup destination.

Wow!  I'm impressed.  I spent 2 hours on the phone with Norton tech support today.  The guy was consulting with his supervisor and peers.  They finally gave up and told me to quit trying.  Your solution took about 45 seconds to implement and it works!!!!

I'm sorry support couldn't help you.  I would like to think that maybe they confused it as a local external drive because of the USB connection.

But I'm glad you got it sorted and maybe one of the Symantec employees will see this and send out a memo.

Re: Norton cannot detect external hard drive plugged into the router usb port.

Hello There. I did what you said as I have the same problem that my Norton Backup can find my detachable seagate harddrive. I can clearly see G drive on my computer (and access the files on the drive itself) but when I go to map the drive this is the only letter that doesn't appear ! Any help or advice gratefully received :) Thanks!
