Norton error message on backup attempts.

I plug-in my backup device that has previously worked fine to backup my computer hard drive.  I click on Norton 360 backup and tell it to get busy.  Norton 360 responds:  "There is a backup problem.  Make sure the destination drive or device is connected and then try again."  After dozens of attempts, shut-downs, restarts, I get the same response from Norton 360.

How do I fix the error?  There is no link to a solution in the error message.  Mechanical Nathan tech support has been no help.

Re: Norton error message on backup attempts.

Hi Coppersnowboard,

Welcome to Norton Community!

Sorry about for the inconvenience! I believe you are trying to run the back up on the external storage device. You can try creating  a new backup set by going to settings->backup settings-> Click configure-> On the summary tab -> Click on Create new back up set -> Ok and choose the correct destination and then save the settings. After that run the back up and check if its working! Let me know if it works.

Re: Norton error message on backup attempts.

The current version of Norton 360 is buggy in regards to the backup software.  I'm curious as to what changed with Norton; the last version was stable and I personally had no problems with the backup function until the current version.

What's most frustrating is, as you can see in the above message from Norton, their 'fix' is to erase your old backup, and start a new backup set.  It's ridiculous.

Welcome,

When you are connecting and disconnecting an external backup device there are a number of cautions. I use an external drive for my backup destination but I do not disconnect it. This allows the OS to find it each time I boot, and before I attempt to do a backup. Changes in teh address of the device will cause a conflict with 360. The software is looking for a location which no longer exists.

If it becomes necessary to create a new backup set it doesn't delete the existing backup files. They are still on the destination drive and can still be accessed if needed.
Hope this helps

Re: Norton error message on backup attempts.

For me, with the latest edition of Norton 360, the error message during backup appears whether I keep the external hard drive connected during boot-up or not.   This has never been an issue with Norton 360, until version 6.

As it stands, to backup a 500 gb drive onto a 750 external, Norton recommends I erase the backup set on the external drive first, and then create a new set each month.  The hard drive is recognized each time, using the same port.   I doubt the address of the hard drive is the problem.

I'm hoping Norton fixes this.

Re: Norton error message on backup attempts.

Just joined and didn't see a "post" option, so had to just reply. I lost my norton 360 and didn't know it until I got a warning of adware, spyware, trojans, etc. last night from Microsoft Security. It said 91 of them were in my pics, downloads, and hard drive. I spent all day of trying to contact Norton, microsoft support over and over and having to do a system restore from safe mode every time! I couldn't even use my Norton disc to fix this. Finally got it back, but still don't know what happened. My problem now is it keeps saying I have an issue with Back up. I keep clicking "Fix Now" but nothing happens. I seem to remember the same thing with norton 360 5.0 until I just gave up on it. Can anyone help?

Re: Norton error message on backup attempts.

nuttysmoke, try posting in a new thread; you might get more assistance that way.

You're going to need to deal with the viruses/trojans first, before  you restore a backup.

Re: Norton error message on backup attempts.

Having to keep the backup drive connected to the computer negates some of the secrity of having a back-up. That being the ability to have a back-up off site for security (theft/fire). I am having a different problem with the 6.0 version of the back-up (see different post), which I did not have until the upgrade. It seems that Norton is pushing for the on-line back-up, which has it's own inherent security issues and risks.

Re: Norton error message on backup attempts.

Since Norton 360 update 6.2.0.9 i am having a backup issue , i have verified the storage drive location and this is still a problem. Second when you run a full system scan and tell it to turn off it does'nt and states there is a backup issue.

Re: Norton error message on backup attempts.

Devenar, that's basically the same issue I'm having.  I'm hoping Norton identifies the problem and fixes it.
