Restart Now or Restart Later, after product updates

Which is best or which is safer after a product liveupdate:   Restart Now, or Restart Later?

The reason for asking is the imagined comparison with product upgrades which require restarting the computer.  I have not found any problem with using the Restart Now button in Norton products instead of going through Windows Start menu for computer restart.

Hi g_cafe_c,

The restart options are for your convenience.  Some updates do not take effect until the system is restarted, so you could make a case that it is best to restart immediately in order to get the benefits of the update right away.  The restart later option though, allows you to postpone shutting down the computer, which is useful if you are right in the middle of working on something and don't want to be interrupted.

The question is:  Better through the product or better through Start menu of Windows?

Re: Restart Now or Restart Later, after product updates

It doesn't make any difference how you initiate the shutdown - it is the shutdown / restart itself that matters.  Files that are associated with processes that are running cannot be replaced while they are in use, so it is necessary to turn off the machine momentarily so that the new files can be installed in place of the old when Windows restarts.
