It looks like a way to stop Norton from running background tasks while your graphics programs are running. From the Help file:
Norton Internet Security automatically turns on Quiet Mode when you perform a few tasks that require higher utilization of your system resources. When Quiet Mode is turned on, Norton Internet Security suspends the background activities and lets the task use the maximum resources for better performance.
Norton Internet Security automatically turns on Quiet Mode when it detects a TV program recording session or a disk-burning session. In addition, you can manually add the programs for which you want Norton Internet Security to turn on Quiet Mode to the Quiet Mode Programs list. When Norton Internet Security detects a running instance of a program that you added in the list, it automatically turns on Quiet Mode. When Quiet Mode is turned on, Norton Internet Security suspends the background activities but does not suppress alerts and notifications.

Elsewhere,
Silent Mode Settings = 1 to 6 hours. (No good enough for anyone working a full day or longer doing Graphics)
Idle Timeout Settings = 1 to 30 min. ?????
Any other settings or miraculous things like Norton going into Quiet Mode during other activities, I don't believe.

Hi
The idle time settings refer to the amount of time that passes before your computer is considered as idle.

Hi Mr Splinter
We are all volunteers that are posting here in the Forums. Symantec employees do read and do sometimes post in the threads. The Symantec employees have their names in RED. This is basically a user to user Forum. This is only a suggestion now of something that may fit your needs better. There are corporate versions of the Symantec products over in the business section of the Symantec website. Perhaps, but I really don't know, maybe one of the business programs would be better suited for your needs.

Hi Mr Splinter
It looks like you are more interested in a security product which will clean up your viruses and nasties rather than one that wants to prevent the nasties from coming into your computer in the first place. N360 product was developed for the user who wants to have prevention and cleaning done with not too much interaction from the user. There is more user control in a product like NIS. As I mentioned before, maybe a corporate product would be more suitable for you. If you are using your computer mainly in a business environment, then I think the corporate section is where maybe you should investigate and check out what programs they have available there and see if they would fit your needs better. N360 is for the home user and small business user as are NAV and NIS.

I only have the N360v4 beta installed. If the following 'User-Specified Programs' option isn't available under Norton 360 v3.n, then apologies, my bad. Frankly, I agree with you that there should be a simple switch to turn off all of the background tasks, should the need arise...
Do you have the 'User-Specified Programs' option?

Elsewhere,
Appreciate the interest and the post. I'm still having a App (Nortons 360) with a mind of its own.
I haven't been back here for a while, because I have moved on.
I will soon be using another piece of software, that looks for viruses and scans my computer when I ask it to.
I will throw Norton 360 in the garbage.
So now we have discovered that, a beta! Version 4 has program specific Quite Mode. FFS!
Who's designing the App?....certainly can't be End Users."Oh! let's throw in another feature in Version 4"
Too late. Flawed program. Makes no sense. Thinks it's a giant of a program. When in fact it should be a mouse with teeth in the background.
I have more important things to do with my computers than wait while other programs slow down BECAUSE Norton 360 has unadjustable, poorly designed, end user input.
Rubbish program. 1/5 Rating. (And that's only for the 'Identity Protection' app)
I'll never buy a Symantec Application again.
See, it's that easy to lose a customer.

Like many others I have lived on and off with significant slow down of both a laptop and a desktop running Norton 360 and XP. My solution was to change Backups and Automatic scans to a scheduled event. I chose a time that I am never on the computer: 2 am for scans and 3 am for backups. I also scheduled Windows update for 4 am. Both computers run faster than ever since I have guaranteed no competition for resources!
