Scanning, slowing down computer.

Hi Guys,

First up just let me say, years ago I was solely a Mac user and only had wonderful experiences with Nortons.

Now I use a PC happily and I am in my first year of using Nortons 360, having crossed over from the full installation of ZoneAlarm.

I am running XP SP2 and have 360 running. I like to tell my computer what to do. Not have it going off and making it's own decisions.

Therefore I use my own back-up system and have tried to tell Norton 360 when I want it to scan.

And here lies my problem. I may be wrong, and would love the wisdom of qualified Mods or other Forum members.

Norton 360 keeps scanning my computer when I do not want it to scan.

If I am doing some CPU intensive Graphics work, then a box will pop up saying Nortons is doing a scan.

Startups are slow too.

I have my scheduling set to 'Manual Schedule Set'.....and the 'Idle Timeout' only goes up 30 minutes!! What is it with that sort of setting? That is not sufficient. Are there any other settings that I have missed that will permanently stop Nortons from scanning when it wants.

I run Manual Quick and Comprehensive scans and go get updates every week. I am a new user and may have missed some setting that stops unnecessary scanning.

If I was using Word all day, I wouldn't care if the scans were going on in the background, but when doing Graphics, anything happening in the background is a hindrance.

A while back I sent an email to support, via their support email address, and all I basically got was a responding email pushing other Symantec Products. Now that was poor customer service.

I love the Identity Protection and the ability it has to login, but as a new user I hope there is an answer to Nortons 360 scanning while I'm working, and how I can control it permanently. If not, as a new user, that would be enough to drive me away looking for a less intrusive product from another Company. I hope there is a solution and it's just me that's made a mistake using the product and it's not the product.

Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I came here to report basically, the same problem. I have 4 external drives and once they start getting scanned, I'm about dead in the water. One 1 Terabyte drive has been churning for ~ 6 hours and Norton won't tell me what it's doing; scanning or backing up, OR give me a way to stop it or pause it.

If you search the help file for the term "pause" there are 4 hits. Clicking on the link for "activities and scans in progress" describes a page that sounds like something useful. I can't find THAT page tho. I wrote to support and received a reply saying delete my temp and prefetch folders. I went to do that and saw files that had nothing to do with Norton and nothing that DID. Then, I was supposed to update the Norton files.

Also, THIS goodie:

"When you computer is in use you will not be able to see this prompt. However when you computer is left idle for some time, the activities prompts is supposed to pop-up."

Well. When the computer is in use, that's when I WANT to see the prompt, and it doesn't pop-up, ever.

Next suggestion was to uninstall and reinstall Norton........

Maybe there was a language problem with the term "prompt". I get a gold pop-up down by the date/time that tells me there's a scan or backup going on. I can't move or minimize the gold box. All I can do is hit the X to close it. The scan or backup does not stop tho.

My system is crawling. It takes almost a minute to display an e-mail. I've turned off automatic tuneup, and am about ready to turn off scans and backups and go all manual.

Re: Scanning, slowing down computer.

I sympathise with the 2nd poster too.

Does anyone from Nortons read these posts?

I need the step & directions for this process please:

How can I stop ANY SCANNING by NORTONS 360 of my Computer WITHOUT MY DIRECT MANUAL OK & INPUT at that time?

Also, why is there NOT a selection choice "NEVER" in the pulldown for the Idle Timeout time selection process?

Help appreciated.....any help.

(and btw.....it would be nice to have a 'confused' emoticon too.....as you have 2 customers here that would like to use it!)

Hi Mr_Splinter,

Can you please tell us which version of Norton 360 you are running?

In order to find out how to check which version you have got, please read this document:

Re: Scanning, slowing down computer.

I am not sure if this will solve the issue, but you could try updating to Norton 360 version 3.5, which is currently the latest version. Depending on which edition of Norton 360 you have got (Standard or Premier), please download the appropriate Norton 360 installation package from one of the links below and save it to your computer:

Norton 360 Standard Edition version 3.5

http://www.norton.com/n360s_3

Norton 360 Premier Edition version 3.5

http://www.norton.com/n360p_3

Install Norton 260 version 3.5 over your Norton 360 3.0 - it should pick up your product key automatically.

Please tell me if this helps - thanks :-)

Re: Scanning, slowing down computer.

I guess it'd be messy to talk to two people at once. I can't edit my message a 2nd time, so have opened

a new thread about being unable to control scheduling.

Ignore my previous message in this thread.

Re: Scanning, slowing down computer.

Yaso,

Where the heck do I find out if I've got 'Premier' or 'Standard' installed?

I've looked on my installation CD, the box packaging, the App Splash Screen....everywhere.

My Product is: Norton 360 Version 3.0 'All-In-One Security'

And like I said in my first post. I've returned back to Norton after being with ZoneAlarm for a few years.

One thing the ZoneAlarm App had was an area in their pop up dialog boxes where the end user could read a description of the Version they are running, engine update details and precise app installation dates. Is there somewhere in my Norton App where I can find this?

Because that's where something like 'Premier' or 'Standard' should be listed.

So how do I know whether I have Premier or Standard installed? Confused....

Cheers

Hi Mr_Splinter,

Premier edition includes 25 GB of online storage space and Standard version 2 GB :-)

Another possibility is to upgrade via the Norton Update Center and run the tool in the Update Center to check which version you have got, and it should tell you that you can upgrade for free to the proper edition of Norton 360 version 3.5:

Re: Scanning, slowing down computer.

MrSplinter:

In the settings for Norton, you will find the idle time scan setting.  You will be able to turn it to off there.  In tasks, as you found, there is only a delay setting.  The quick scans will still run, but will probably not be noticeable.  You will still be getting pulse updates, which should also not be noticeable on your system.

There should also be a setting to turn off the backup process in N360.  Since I run NIS I'm not sure where that is, but once you find the idle time scan setting, look in that area for more choices.
