Hi, Someone may be able to help.
The problem started when for no obvious reason my wife’s windows Vista laptop started blue screen crashing, every time just after start up.
By disabling stuff in the configuration manager (in safe mode). I narrowed it down to the Symantec Settings Manager Service.
With all over services enabled and the Symantec Settings Manager Service disabled there are no more blue screens.
Unsurprisingly Norton 360 no longer starts.
I then updated Windows and tried doing a scan with windows defender.
However I could not download the update file for windows defender.
I then tried Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and also found I could not download updates. Here is the log from Hijack this:

When running the Hijack this scan I also got a message starting with the text "For some reason your system denied write asses to the hosts file..."
Any help getting this laptop clean and protected again would be much appreciated . Cheers, Fraze
