I have an existing version of Norton 360 on my computer which is about to terminate. I just bought a new version on cd, Norton 360 version 5.0. I put the disc in but am not able to get it to update my previous version. Currently when I put the disk in, it pulls up the initializing screen for a minute, then just terminates. Does anyone have any insight for me?

What is the version of Norton 360 installed in your computer? is that also 5.0? if it is, then you activate it using the product Key that is on your Norton 360 CD cover. Here is how you can do it:
Make sure that your computer is connected to the Internet.
Start Norton 360.
On the bottom-right corner of the Norton product window, click Activate Now.
Type in your Product Key.
Follow the on-screen instructions.
When finished, review your subscription details, and then click Done.
If you have an old version installed in your computer, if you are not able to open the Norton product, then you need to run the Norton Removal tool to uninstall the current version. You can download the Norton Removal Tool from the following Support Article:
After you run the Norton Removal Tool and restart the computer, insert the CD and then install the Norton product.

Welcome to Norton Community!
You can download Norton 360 directly from the Symantec Web site and use the latest installer for updating Norton 360 in your computer. You can use any one the following links according to the product you have purchased:
Norton 360 V5 Standard - www.norton.com/n360s_5
Norton 360 V5 Premier - www.norton.com/n360p_5
Download and save the installer file to your desktop, don't use the installer now. You need to download and run the Norton Removal Tool: http://www.symantec.com/nrt
Once you complete running the Norton Removal Tool, restart the computer and then use the new installer you have downloaded earlier. Use the Product Key from the CD for activation. Let us know the results.

There is a small suggestion to you...
Before you ran the Norton Removal Tool, make sure that you take backup of all the datas and passwords that you set with Norton 360. If you dont have any passwords, then ran the Norton Removal Tool and go for the installation of Norton 360 V5.0

The reason it won't install is that the version on a CD is the original issues in the spring and your installed version had been updated.
You don't have to reinstall but just click on Subscribe, I think it is, on the main screen and enter the KEY that came with the CD you bought.
If they are both of the same version of N360 -- Standard or Premier -- that will in effect renew your subscription that terminated.
It will work even if your "existing" version is not V5 and then we can get you fully uptodate.
That will be much simpler, as I see it, if your existing version is working OK or was when the subscription ran out. Just be sure to run LiveUpdate a few times manually with a reboot in between and then to do a full system scan incase you got infected.
Of course if you did get infected then that could try to stop Norton from installing!

Where did you purchase your N360? Was it an online purchase that you had to download? Was it a site like eBay by any chance? Thanks.
