Updateding from norton 360 v3 to v5 or latest

Does anyone know if Symantec system will allow me to upgrade my Norton 360 v3 (brand new just installed)  to version 5 or latest? Or can I install v5 and then use KEY that came in with V3?

Instead of buying 360 v5 I would buy v3 for little less and then upgrade it. Please let me know.

Thanks.

Yes you can upgrade free to V5 if your subscription is still unexpired

And yes you can download and install V5 and activate it with the V 3 KEY, which is the best route to take but you say you have already installed V3 ....

Under the circumstances I would myself use either the Update Center, which has the advantage of giving you updated definitions in the actual upgrade download, or download the V5 as below and installl it on top of your existing V3 intallation.

Sometimes upgrades don't always go well and particularly if you had any other security application installed on the PC before your current V3 intall I'd suggest a complete cleanup for which we can give you details and a link to download the current version of N 360 V5 -- do you have the Standard Version (2GB of free online storage) or Premier (25 GB of free online storage) ?

So here's my boilerplate on background information and if you let us know the answers -- some of which you hve already given but it helps to have them all in the one message.

Did the computer have any other security software on it when you installed Norton 360 V3?

If so what is it; if there was and you removed it how did you remove it?

Apart from the normal uninstalling nearly every security program has a special cleanup tool on its website that you can download and run after the normal install. Let us know first and we can point you to the right tools to use including one for Norton products if you had one installed -- like the trial versions that come on new computers. If they are identical to what you want to install now you may not have to clean up and we can tell you the shortcut.

What version of Windows are you using including Service Packs and whether 32 bit or 64 bit as well as the Name and Version ID of the Norton product that you are using -- Help or Support / About is where that is, in the format of nn.nn.nn.nnn where n is a number.

If you get any error messages please give the exact wording of them as well as any other background that could be helpful.

Please also say what internet browser you are using -- name and version number ...

Thanks so much for getting back so quickly.

***My answers***

You wrote:

My reply:

I have Standard version

You wrote:

My reply:

No, it didn't have any.

*I have Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 (64bit)

* I have 3 computers / 1 has latest Norton 360 / another has Norton Internet Security 2011 and 3rd has McAfee Security

***My other questions***

*I would like to uninstall Norton 360, Norton Security and McAfee Security and then install Norton 360. I need Norton 360, Norton Security and McAfee Security uninstall tools so I could clean it all up first. Where could I find them?

*3rd PC where McAfee Security is running - Netbook so I need the "light (low resource utilizing)" version of Norton 360 if there is such thing out there. I was reading as if there was but I am not sure.

Thank you!

I can't deal with your main question tonight.

Unless this N 360 5.1.0.29 is not working properly or there is something wrong with the operating system and you want to reinstall Windows there is not any need to reinstall this copy since that is the current version of V5.

So if you have a reason to do so perhaps you could say why .... ?

Re: Updateding from norton 360 v3 to v5 or latest

No a prob. I can wait for a full answer whener you will have some time. All the uninstall tools I could probably find it on my own.

I just need to know if there is any kind fo Norton 360 install (light version) specifically for netbooks.

As for N 360 5.1.0.29 I will prob keep it as is. U see I wanted to uninstall it so I could start with it fresh (at the moment I am using my friends key and I want to switch that and use my own). Not to say that I cannot switch under current installation, but I would

preffer uninstalling it and then installing it fresh.

Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it.

Re: Updateding from norton 360 v3 to v5 or latest

darminal,

<<  if there is any kind fo Norton 360 install (light version) specifically for netbooks.  >>

There is a Netbook edition of Norton 360 -- see http://us.norton.com/360-netbook-edition/  but two things: The Keys are not interchangeable between the 4 subversions I mentioned and so if you have a normal N360 3 PC Standard you cannot use that key to activate the netbook edition and it is not really a light version but the standard versions.

It comes on a thumbdrive to deal with the absence of an optical drive on netbooks and the graphics was tuned to deal with the smaller screens of the early netbooks. It has some battery saving settings set to ON by default so that it does not do idle time jobs while you are on battery but those can be set in the standard version.

Many people are using the standard version on netbooks with no problems.

If by any chance your netbook came with the netbook edition installed you either have to buy a netbook subscription (for 3 PCs! -- many have asked for this to change to an interchangeable key since not many have 3 netbooks while many have a mix ..... There's a thread in Product Suggestions here suggesting this so please add your kudos to the message from the original poster since Norton do monitor the reactions and take them into account.

<<  I have 3 computers / 1 has latest Norton 360 / another has Norton Internet Security 2011 and 3rd has McAfee Security >>

Do you want to install N360 on all three since you will have a licence for 3 PCs? If so and given that the N360 you have is old (but the subscription is still valid? ) I would uninstall all three using the NRT for the two Norton products and the McAfee tool for that one.

Note that you should export the Identity Safe Data to a safe place before uninstalling so you can Import it again. If you used Identity Safe on both N 360 and NIS export both to different files but you can import the NIS identity safe data into N 360 if you do replace NIS with N 360.

Please clarify about the NIS installation and replacing it or not ....

Anyway the same Norton Removal Tool will remove the various versions so what you will need for cleaning up is the Norton and the McAfee tools:

I would not trust an older copy of SymNRT to be able to remove all the latest patches to the software. Since Norton are updating their products all the time, the Norton Removal Tool is constantly updated.

This link: Symantec Norton Removal Tool. will direct you to the current Symantec Norton Removal Tool.

And

McAfeehttp://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

Then if you have the licence for the 3 PC N 360 Standard version download it from below since it will be more uptodate than anything on disk you may have purchased.

Did either computer have any other security software on it when you started downloading to install Norton 360? If so what is it; if there was and you removed it how did you remove it? Apart from the normal uninstalling nearly every security program has a special cleanup tool on its website that you can download and run after the normal install. Let us know first and we can point you to the right tools to use including one for Norton products if you had one installed -- like the trial versions that come on new computers. If they are identical to what you want to install now you may not have to clean up and we can tell you the shortcut.

New N360 V5: Click on the link that matches your version:

Norton 360 v5 Standard: http://www.norton.com/n360s_5/  << version with 2GB of online storage

Make sure you get the right version since the keys are not interchangeable. SAVE the file where you can find it -- do not run it from the download site when Windows asks what you want to do.

You can download that file on any computer and transfer it to a thumbdrive to install on another.

If you have VISTA (or Windows 7) on all the computers I recommend starting the installation by right mouse clicking on the downloaded file and selecting Run as Administrator since I find it gives more rleiable results ... but it is not available in XP and may not be available in Windows 7 Starter if that's what the netbook has.

You can use that file for all your installations and use the KEY to activate on normal and on netbook PCs. On N360 you click on Subscribe on the main screen and then use the KEY -- you should log into your existing MyNortonAccount and you may find that it will automatically pick up the KEY .... If not type it in or copy/paste it in.

That's a lot so do say if you've any questions ......
