Very slow startup of Norton 360 after backup enabled

I'm running 360 v3. I bought an external drive for backups. Went to settings and added a bunch of maps that I wanted to have backed up. This takes a while, which is fine first time. However, it became so slow I decided to switch backup off again. Every time I now start up my PC, it takes about 10 minutes before the Norton icon appears in my right below taks bar while my normal hard disk is very active.

Initially I still had the icon overlays, but I switched that off (no improvement). I also see that in the Norton Backup Drive there is still a reference to my external drive.

Anyhow, how can I get back to normal mode again.

Many thanks, WIlke

Re: Very slow startup of Norton 360 after backup enabled

Well, 73 views, not one single reply :mansad: Guess that is because there is no solution to this problem. Anyhow, after some serious chatting with local Symantec the only solution was.... surprise, surprise (not really)... remove 360 (I mean really really remove, you know how hard that is with Norton, amazing disfunctional) and reinstall and make sure backup is switched off from the start. This fixed the issue.. Now be sure never (I mean NEVER) use backup for 360. It is in my humble opinion seriously flawed and it eats resources. I now have a free backup solution, which I can run automatically on shutdown once a week (yep, it has a commandline interface, unlike 360), it is fast, small, free GPL licensed, has great functionality compared to 360 and works really great.

Anyhow, problem fixed and I will consider a free alternative when my subscription on 360 runs out....

Hi webeling,

We are sorry that you did not receive a response to your issue. However, I'm glad to hear that Symantec Customer Support was able to help you; also, thanks for posting back with the solution.

You can mark this thread solved by clicking on your own post since it contains the solution (reinstallation of Norton 360 - via the removal tool, I presume) :-)

Re: Very slow startup of Norton 360 after backup enabled

Hi Webeling, the N360 in general is a good product apart from the backup feature. It just seems to be the cause of so many issues.A few months ago I was having all sorts of problems with my 360 which after several uninstall/reinstalls by the Symantec tech staff they managed to fix everything apart from the backup. As a result the backup has been turned off ever since which was the suggestion by Symantec themselves. As a consolation Symantec added 2 months to my subscription.I should point out that my 360 has run flawlessly ever since. So well in fact that I am actually considering renewing my subscription which is due in 7 weeks despite being unable to use the backup.Better the devil you know I think.I do wonder though how many customers leave the 360 over the backup problems.
