am I "wasting" a renewal

What if I renew my subscription now, and then buy a new computer (which comes with its own subscription) just a few months later?

Welcome

It depends on what you are going to do with the old computer. If you are getting the new computer as a second computer, your subscription will expire 1 year from the first activation, ie on the old computer. I am assuming you are getting the 3 PC 1 year product.

New computers may come with a 60 day trial version of a security software. If you are just retiring the old computer, you may be able to get Norton Support to add the 60 days to your old subscription, or you may not. All you can do is try.

Here's the link to the Norton Support that Peterweb refers to -- they are very helpful so it is worth asking if they can add the two together if you get a new PC with a free trial, but it is not a routine thing they do.

If you are no longer using the old computer they can help you deactivate the licence so that it is available for use on another computer.

To contact customer support Click on this link https://www.norton.com/chat  and work on from there.

Please let us know how you get on ....

Re: am I "wasting" a renewal

I'm not familiar with this "60 day trial" thing. When I got this computer it came with a three year subscription.

I have sent an email and am waiting for a reply from Support. Thanks for the link. I looked, but couldn't find one.

That must have been a special promotion that included the full version with 3 years protection. The normal offer these days is just a 60 day trial version. If you buy a new computer now, this is probably what you will get.

When you get the replacement computer, it may be possible to have any remaining time  added. As we have noted, online chat is the quickest and easiest way to do this. Obviously you need to have the new computer to do this.

vje,

If you are not in the USA what country are you in?

What make and model of computer is it -- enough so we can look it up on line.

Then we can help more.

Re: am I "wasting" a renewal

I got a reply from Norton that answers my question --

"I wish to inform you that you can transfer the subscription to your new computer even after renewing the existing subscription."

I guess what I couldn't find was a way to contact them.

Thanks very much for the link. That did it.

Cheers.

When you do it, please remember about not using the disk you bought. And please tell us what happens because if when they said:

<< you can transfer the subscription to your new computer even after renewing the existing subscription. >>

they meant:

<< you can transfer the subscription to your new computer even after renewing the existing subscription and will add your unexpired time on the old subscription to the 3 years on the new subscription>>

Then this is something that at least I did not know about ..... Did they say how to do it?

So please let us know what you did and what happens.

If it does replace the unexpired time on the new PC then that's OK since all you need to do is to contact them again and they do have the tools to add the time back in.

Re: am I "wasting" a renewal

Thank you for contacting Norton Support.

I wish to inform you that you can transfer the subscription to your new computer even after renewing the existing subscription.

Please follow the steps as given below to download, remove and install the Norton 2012 program on your new computer.

  1. Download Norton Internet Security 2012 from the link - http://www.norton.com/nis12 and save the file - NIS-ESD-19-5-1-2-EN.exe in the desktop

  2. Download the Norton Removal Tool from the link - http://www.symantec.com/nrt/ and run it on your computer once downloaded

Note: The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2003 and later products, Norton 360, and Norton SystemWorks 12.0 from your computer. If you use ACT! or WinFAX, back up those databases before you proceed.

  3. Double click on the file NIS-ESD-19-5-1-2-EN.exe which you downloaded and follow the on-screen instructions to install Norton Internet Security 2012 program

  4. Activate your Norton Internet Security 2012 program using the product key - [not sure if the # they gave is just for me, so I'm not sharing that part] by following the Activation steps provided in the link below:

    http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=v63471109_EndUserPr...

Norton Internet Security 2012 can be used once it is activated in your computer and please run the LiveUpdate to update the virus definitions.

I haven't done this yet, so I'm not sure how it will turn out.
