I've tried numerous times. I've rebooted computer. I rebooted and didn't touch any other application. I still get this error after it runs for hours and doesn't complete.
The announced error is 8702,32
Product name: Norton 360 Premier Edition
Version: 5.1.0.29
Yes, I can access everything else over the internet just fine. I have no other errors.
I have plenty of space (over 21G unused).
I have never been able to backup this computer and I'm increasingly frustrated.
According to winver, I'm running Windows 7,Version 6.1, build 7601: service pack 1.
Thank you

Hi,
are you behind a router? Or do you connect to the internet direcly with this machine?

Yes, I'm behind a router and LAN. However, recall I get about 1/3 done (> 500 M) transferred before error message. In other words, the error message doesn't surface for a long long time after beginnning.
Also, this process worked fine on an earlier computer.

Can you please try this:
1. Create a new backup set with a small amount of data. Maybe around 10MB.
2. Set the backup location to the online one
3. Save the new backupset
4. Run the backup set.
Does it finish without any issues?

It means that there's nothing wrong with the connection between your machine and the Symantec servers. What I can now only assume is that during the data transfer sometimes the data stream isn't fast enough between you and the Symantec serves, and this leads to a connection error (8702,32 is one kind of a connection issue).
What could be done to avoide this issue is to create smaller backup sets. This way you don't have to reupload again the total large datasize, but only the smaller ones. Maybe it is good to make 2-250MB large backupsets from the original big one (you should test which datasize upload finishes without errors).
Let us know the results.

I did this and it appears to be working. However, this is not easier than just using the backup to DVD! I have to set up all these backups and make sure they are all working. It is easier to just write the files to DVD.
just saying....
having the issue be an intermittent server non-response timeout is not good. You should organizes so timeouts aren't a problem in the first place. I can't control the internet between you-and-I....

I forgot to add...
Thank you for your help! I do appreciate it. I just wish the 'real' problem was fixed...

Just remember, Norton doesn't control your Internet connection, either! Evidently, that is where the real problem is. If your ISP cannot provide a reliable Internet connection that meets your needs, it may be time for you to consider a different ISP. Or, as you note, you could back up to DVD (or to a USB drive), which would also give you greater control over your data; that's actually how I run my own backups.

Roadrunner cable is pretty darn fast. I get excellent very fast upload and download results.
We both know we can't control between. However, norton *can* control its definition of time out.
Thanks for your help. I backed up files online and pictures on dvd/cd. No more red Xs.
