Norton 360

It is connected direct to a USB socket on the motherboard.

I had not deleted the original defaultSet, so have now also done that and the backup did progress a bit further (48% complete).

It then said Drive G (the destination drive) needs to be formatted.....

Once Norton backup finishes and reports an error, Windows then throws up the Autoplay window for a newly detected drive.

Interestingly, I had been using my PC recently with a USB memory stick also plugged into a USB port.

Windows 7 kept seeing that as a new drive attached (as with the USB external hard drive referred to above).  Presumably there was a similar issue with a USB floppy disk drive I had connected, as I keep hearing it spin up every now and then when there is a disk in it.

Now - I have removed the USB memory stick and touch wood, to date have not had the notification popup to say drive detected (or worse, drive needs formatting!)..

On the other hand, Norton backup now just gives up all together - as soon as it starts copying files to the USB external hard drive (check it is accessing the correct drive letter - H), N360 gives an error saying check backup device is connected and then try again - all this even if I have opened a Windows Explorer folder and can happily view the files on the external hard disk at the same time.

It looks as though there is definitely an issue with N360's backup and how it finds externally mounted USB devices.

I wonder how much longer it will be before this is fixed....

Interestingly, I noticed that N360 did some backups to my USB Memory Stick instead of my USB Hard Disk (even though the USB Hard Disk is fixed as Drive H and that is what N360 is configured to use for backups) 

Ever since that happened, I can no longer perform backups under Norton 360 at all - it just always complains that the device is not present without copying one file !

I guess I could delete the backup set (yet again) and start all over again (and then just put up with having to run the backup 30-40 times to get it to complete without complaining the USB Hard disk has been disconnected), but what is the use of an incremental backup if you have to redo it from scratch every time you plug / unplug another USB memory device.....

Yes, if you read back through the thread, you will see that I first experienced this problem with v5, then v6 made matters worse!

I have resolved this problem at last - there seems to be two factors:

a) I had the USB Hard Disk powered through a expansion lead with spike filters.  I have now plugged it directly into a master socket and do not get the mounting / unmounting issue for some reason - they must be VERY prone to power fluctuation for this to be a factor.

b) I spoke to Norton Technical support and completely removed N360 v6.  I then reinstalled it and re-created my backup set and the program could then write th ebackup to my USB hard disk again.  Whether the actual problem in N360 has been solved, waits to be seen - as whatever the issue caused by (a), the second issue was that N360 would no longer even try to backup to the USB hard drive.

I really think that this needs to be tested further - but am unwilling to do so on my system as I am fed up with having to re-create backup sets.....

In summary (excluding the mounting / remounting issue caused by power) the problem was:

a) My external USB Hard Disk is set up to be mounted ALWAYS as drive H - N360 was configured to make a backup set on that destination.

b) N360 was backing up without any problems to my H drive.

c) I inserted a USB Flash Stick, only to find when I inserted it in another computer, there were now N360 backup files on it !!  My USB hard disk was still connected as drive H at this time - this was drive I: from memory

d) After removing the USB Flash Stick, N360 ALWAYS failed to make any further backups to the hard disk - saying it was not connected (even though it was clearly visible as drive H in Windows Explorer).

e) Even deleting the backup set and trying to create a new one on drive H gave the same error (destination device not connected or available).

f) Remove N360 and reinstall - then create new backup set to drive H - it works fine..

- I wonder what will happen if I have to use my USB Flash Stick again....
