boot crashes/9 min delay when does boot since last week's updates? (vs 6, running in Win 7)

Ever since updates to Norton 360 vs 6 that happened around Apr 23rd, my system takes 8 1/2 to 9 mins to boot up (when it used to take less than 2), and sometimes fails to boot, gives a BSOD, and then runs startup repair and announces that failed. (After that, if you shut down it usually boots ok... after the 9 min delay again. When the delay happens, it sits in the "Windows is starting: graphic until just before it finally works, the times it does.

I tried removing Norton through windows uninstall and then downloading N360 from the website to reinstall. 2 other times, after I happened to get an error 8504,5 message from Norton itself, I let it try to auto fix it, and it had me download the Norton remove and reinstall tool to do the same thing. Each time the result was the same - removing Norton immediately restored my computer to normal speed and functionality upon the reboot it would then do between the removal and the reintall - and then the freshly downloaded installation would cause the same problems to manifest all over again.

Can anyone offer ay advice on this issue?

Hi a1000m,

To get a clean installation of N360,  you might be best running the Norton Removal Tool.

First,  export your ID safe to a secure location.  (E.G.,  A USB flash drive).  Uninstall by the Control Panel and reboot.  Download and run the Norton Removal Tool and reboot.  Then log in to your Norton Account and download a fresh copy of N360.  Run Live Update,  rebooting where required until no more updates are available.  Import your ID Safe data.

Let us how you get on.

Thanks,  Dave.

OK, so just to be clear, you are saying to do the full uninstall that doesn't leave any of my preferences and info behind (so I'll have to set up all my backup prefs again and everything), rather than the one I've been doing that leaves my info on the computer? I will do that, if you think it stands a good chance of getting rid of this crippling issue, but I want to be clear about it. I'm guessing I can use the help files within 360 to learn how to back up the info you suggested and then re-import it first.

Re: boot crashes/9 min delay when does boot since last week's updates? (vs 6, running in Win 7)

Unfortunately, although I tried the entire proceedure you describe above exactly, the problem (9 minute boot up delays), reappeared as soon as I installed Norton again... so I tried the whole proceedure another time through... and the same thing happened yet again... and that was my whole morning's free time (I work nights), so I'm off to bed and if you have any more suggestions I can try those tomorrow. (and I did the whole uninstall, to remove my settings and everything, backed up my identity safe, etc).

hope to hear from you soon,

Just curious, do you have any other security programs installed that are running in real-time, possibly @ startup that could be in conflict with Norton (or vice-versa).  Possibilites may be MSE, MBAM Pro or SAS Pro, etc.

I searched for all of those and came up negative. Nothing on the list of my startup programs seems to be any sort of program like that, and everything on the startup list now was there before I started to have these problems last week, I'm afraid. This computer has never had any security software installed besides Norton and the basic stuff that came with windows

Re: boot crashes/9 min delay when does boot since last week's updates? (vs 6, running in Win 7)

The problem accelarated over the weekend to the point where my computer was failing to boot at all 9 times out of 10, so the 10th time, I was forced to remove my Norton 360 vs 6 and NOT reinstall it. I've had no problems at all with my system since then, but obviously, it is not desireable to be relying on Windows Defender, nor to consider another product with several years of Norton behind me and 200-someodd paid days left in my current subscription. Any other ideas?

Hi

Please Run the Norton Power Eraser and let us know of its findings(Do Not fix anything you get a Green Signal). A screenshot (Power eraser's results) can be more helpful.

And Can you please attach the minidump in your Next post.

It can be found in this location =  c:\windows\minidump\minidump.dmp
