conflict with fingerprint reader

My Norton 360 would stop working every once in a while - can't even open the interface.  So I had to remove the software and reinstall every now and then.  But it seems the Norton Removal tool would uninstall my fingerprint reader software as well.  So I reinstalled Norton 360 first, works.  as soon as I installed the fingerprint reader the Norton 360 won't work again.

I got Norton 360 6.0 running on Lenovo Thinkpad W520, Windows 7 64-bit

I've been uninstalling / reinstalling for more than 5 times this afternoon.  Does anyone know how to fix this?  or  has anyone else got the same problem?

Hi coolkitt,

Are you sure it is the fingerprint reader that is causing the conflict?  We have had a rash of Lenovo problems caused by RapidBoot (version 1.0) It seems that version causes problems, but the latest update, which I believe is Version 1.2 does not.  Please see if version 1 of RapidBoot is installed and causing your problem.

Let us know how you make out.

Re: conflict with fingerprint reader

Thanks Yank.  I updated rapidboot to 1.2, seems to work!

Hope from now on I don't have to keep uninstalling/reinstalling Norton 360.  Just a bit confused why the fingerprint software would have been removed by the norton removal tool.

You're welcome and other Lenovo users have said that fix works, so you should be done reinstalling N 360.

In regards to the fingerprint software, I have no idea, unless, Norton saw it as something that could cause a conflict with N 360.  Norton (and most other security programs) will (ask to ) remove other software that conflicts with it.

That may be a good question for the Lenovo forum.

Yank,

Would Norton treat this as a false positive?  There is some procedure for reporting those although I don't know how to go about it.

If you are asking me for my opinion - I would say no it is not a false positive, as there is nothing false about it.  It is an outright conflict (show stopper) as it will not permit Norton products from opening.  My understanding now is that the RapidBoot 1.0 causes this conditioln and that RapidBoot has been updated to a new version which plays nicely with Norton.  Botttom line once updated - no more problem.

There is a procedure here:  https://submit.symantec.com/false_positive/

Re: conflict with fingerprint reader

Thanks for the explanation -- that it is now known to be linked to RapidBoot, which I was familiar with, cancels my question.

Although something that is an integral part of the system -- which a fingerprint reader is on mnay notebooks -- that Norton is operating under should not in itself be regarded as hostile by Norton. All other things being equal, it seems to me that Norton should adapt to it rather than the other way round!

But as I said if it's the consequence of RapidBoot then that does not apply.
