error message: backup failed because you do not have enought free space for your back ups.

I have a 80gb hard drive that I back up my important files onto.  Those files add up to about 61GB.  As I understand it, 360 v2 does incremental back up.  So I do not understand why it needs anymore space than the amount of files it is backing up?  Please help.  I am ready to get rid of both 360 and norton ghost because they are nothing but trouble.
