Are the contents of the identity safe backed up as part of a normal automatic backup? I updated my comcast  norton 360 to internet security 4 and after i did my password to the identity safe didnt work. I sure would like to find the passwords that seem to be lost

Re: identity safe

Hello JimAC and welcome!

Unfortunately, the Identity Safe Data is not included in the backup.  However there may be a way to retrieve your data.

But first could you clarify which product you are running now?

"I updated my comcast  norton 360 to internet security 4"

There is no internet security 4, but there is a 360 (Comcast NSS) version 4.

Thanks!

Re: identity safe

Norton Security Suite 4 was what i put on and it said 360 had to be uninstalled and it did that . Then after the new product was installed my password to identity safe did not work. I restored my computer to the day before the install and that removed the new norton but the old 360 would not start even though its files were back  in the 360 program folder . I reinstalled the old 360 and the passwords are still not there. I cant believe that the passwords are not backed up in a automatic back up .I know there must be a good reason but i sure cant think of what it could be

So ..I have the original 360 running now

Re: identity safe

Since you had removed the program files for NSS v3, when you did the system restore the registry entries were in effect orphaned.

Let's hope that the data is still there through all this.

  1. Be sure your Folder Options are set to "Show hidden files and folders".
  2. Search My Computer for IdentitySafeDataStore. Depending upon your operating system it may be located in Documents and Settings or elsewhere.
  3. Expand the folders IdentitySafeDataStore > S-1-5-21-.... and copy just the contents of the S-1-5-21 .... folder to a new folder in a convenient location. (Inside the folder you should see an IDDStore file and an IDDStore_bak file along with a number of favicons - copy all)

To restore the Identity Safe Data:

  1. If you have not done so already, create an Identity Safe profile on the new installation.  Do not import any IE logins.
  2. Search for and locate the IdentitySafeDataStore on your new installation and make a note of the location.
  3. Restart your computer in Safe Mode.
  4. Navigate to the new IdentitySafeDataStore\S-1-5-21 .... folder.
  5. Delete any content in the S-1-5-21 .... folder.
  6. Paste the previously copied individual contents into the S-1-5-21 .... folder.
  7. Restart your computer in regular mode.

Check your identity Safe to see if it now displays your data. If so, backup up your Identity Safe Data right now.

Re: identity safe

Thank you very much !! That brought them all back and I am very happy . Everything went exactly like you instructed .

I found and saved the contents of that folder . Then i removed norton 360 and used the clean up tool also and did a new install of the new Norton security suite. I followed your instructions and all is well

I think i got very lucky that they were not deleted and i did back them up the proper way now ...twice :-)

Is there a way to include the logins in the automatic backup with the new software or do you have to do  a manual backup whenever you add a new login?

Thanks again

Jim

Re: identity safe

Hi Jim,

I'm glad that worked out for you.

To answer your question, I have not been able to include the "logins" in the automatic backup.

Using N360v5 Beta, I opened Manage Backup Sets > What (tab) and at the bottom selected Add or exclude files & folders.

On the next page I selected "Include Folder" and Browsed to the folder containing IdentitySafeDataStore

After running the Backup Set, I opened the IdentitySafeDataStore folder only to find the files marked with the blue icon overlay indicating they were not backed up.  I then disabled Norton Product Tamper Protection, but still failed to backup these files.

Even if they had been backed up, they would have been in the same format as used in the recovery method you performed.

My suggestion is to backup your ID Safe data on a regular basis, saving one backup to an external media and saving one copy to a local folder under "My Documents".  If "My Documents" is included in your backup set, then you will always have a copy of the .NPM file which can easily be used to restore your Identity Safe Data.

Hope that helps.
