power options settings in control panel: Hibernate/standby and never..

I am not sure which power setting I should choose on my Dell Dimension.E-510 in control panel.  It has and automated update that i have set for 3 am..IF I have chosen: to trun off monitor in 30 minutes, and ;hibernate after 2 hours..and standby after 1 hr, does this comply with the 'auto update time'  or as I understand it, the whole shebang is Td-off ., like overnight.  Does it have the ability to T-on from a deep sleep ( Hibernate).. and  is it the same with the different scans, etc, that Norton 360 does,,  I know this sounds pretty 'basic' for most of you all..but Maybe I should just select never? Hi,

Very reasonable question. Let's see if I can craft understandable answers for you.

First where are you making the setting changes? If in windows they have no connection with your settings in 360.

360 cannot wake up your computer in order to run scans and it will not update while the system sleeps.

It sounds like you are setting windows to check for updates and possibly install them at 0300 [zero dark 30 for another translation]. This is about the same time I have set for my updates. For various reasons my system stays on at all times, unless I'm rebooting or repairing :smileywink:

Hope this helps. If not please keep asking and we'll keep trying to respond. As always

Re: power options settings in control panel: Hibernate/standby and never..

I guess then you're saying, in the 'power options' I should check " never'regarding the hard drives?  In  doing so, it seems the other choices contradict that choice? In the 360 it is a continual operations of scans etc?

I just added fuel to the fire.  I am trying to come up with some organizational system and purchased 'neat desk,.  right off the bat I get into Microsoft Money( 2006) and they want me to accept or decline their own online security protection  " Passport Network"..I am having trouble..How to I use just Norton?  TOO MUCH< THANX..? k

setting up Neat Desk w/ Microsoft Money 2006. Do I 'decline' the network security"

I want to only use one.The confusion between different security programs is confusing and seems they would conflict. Or be redundant..How do I narrow it to just Norton?  Are there programs then I need to 'uninstall' or disable"..Obviously I am NOT very knowledgeble PC users.. so please in simplest form..thankx  K

Just setting the Hard Drives settings is not the same as having the computer stay on.

Set the power settings as you mentioned, ie sleep 1 hour, hybernate 2 hours. Set Norton to run scans when your system is idle. That way, if you just leave your computer when you are finished, Norton will have time to run its' tasks.

As for accepting another security solution, the answer is no. All security suite vendors advise against having more than one installed at the same time. Conflicts arise when both try to scan a file.
