restoring a norton 360 back up file located on external drive

hi,

I have a norton 360 back up file located on an external hard drive, which was created on an earlier version of norton 360. I have since renewed my registration, upgraded to 360 v.5 and copied the earlier back up file across to my computer. I have been unable to restore the back up and the settings functions wont allow me to restore this file. All assistance and advice welcome

What was the version of N360 that the backup was made with?  Did you copy the entire directory of the backup to your computer or just a backup file?

it was version 4. how do i tell if i backed up the directory? the backed up file (N360_backup) is located on an external drive, as I had a problem with internal drive and lost all files and then my norton 360 expired and had to upgrade to version 5.

Re: restoring a norton 360 back up file located on external drive

Hi, ajames,

Welcome to our community!

If what you have on your external drive is the entire backup you made with your old Norton, look for the files arestore.exe and arestore.loc in the root directory of your external drive. (If your external drive is drive E: then its root directory is E:\ --the highest level directory, that's not in any subfolder.)

If the files are not there, you can search your hard drive for them and copy them there. Then run arestore.exe and it will rebuild the catalog of your backup so you can restore your files.

Keep us posted, and let us know if you have any difficulties. We're here to help.
