Re: using Norton 360: zombie processes

Mike,

If I understand your post correctly, when you apply the fix for buShell it works, right?

Curious as to why FF 3.0.1 is having this issue, since others have reported not having the problem. I just tried FF 3.0.1 on one of my machines here, that also is XP SP3, with N360 2.3.1.4 and I don't see the problem.

Could you try it on your other machines, it would be good to know if it's just 1 machine or all of them.

Thanks,

Matt

Re: using Norton 360: zombie processes

Matt,

Tried on this portable, one of the PCs mentioned. Got confimation dialogue box with bushell fix, as I did on the other PC.

Photoshop gave same problem initially. So did FF.

Then rebooted.

Photoshop CS3 seems to be OK now. FF problem is just the same.

Will close this browser session and leave it running for an hour or so and see if the process dies. Will also try the fix on the third XP PC later this evening.

Hey Matt,

I can confirm I am having the issue with firefox 3 as well. The problem disappeared for a while after doing the bushell thing and now its back again. I'm still trying to figure out how I can reproduce it because it does it sometimes and not others. I'm fiddling with the add-ons and themes at the moment. I think its one of those causing it to do it but I could be wrong. I've disabled all for now and am waiting to see if it does it again...would be interesting to find out if the others have themes or add ons installed as well - or if they have the skype extension installed (found in addons). I remember when I initially un registered the bushell I had the problem but then had to remove the skype extension to stop the zombie process thing happening.

Re: using Norton 360: zombie processes

You might try this if you havent already:

Start FF in its safe mode (Start>Programs>mozilla>firefox (safe mode))

After it gets up, close it and start FF normally.  I have found out that some of the themes or other extensions sometimes don't play well with each other.

Re: using Norton 360: zombie processes

Ah, well done Stacey.

Two extensions are causing this problem for me:

- PicLens

- Skype extension for Firefox.

I use 10 other extensionson this PC, can give details of ones that are OK if that's useful.

All the plugins I'm using are OK.

I can live without PicLens, but the Skype extension is a serious one because it's automatically installed by Skype installation.

MIke, by one of those conincidences I read this thread and then a while later found myself checking up on IE8Beta2 which has just been released and glancing at the Release Notes for this I found a bunch of incompatibilities listed including:

Skype

Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 displays a compatibility warning when certain versions of the Skype add-in are installed. This issue occurs because Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 and specific versions of this add-in are incompatible, and the installation is unstable. When you disable this add-in, the main functionality of the Skype product is unaffected.

Make sure that your version of the Skype add-in is 2.2.0.193 or a later version. To do this, click the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, point to Manage Add-ons, and then click Enable or Disable Add-ons.

For more information and for updates, visit the following Skype Web site:

Have you checked Skype for the latest updates in case you have run into a similar situation but with Firefox? Just a wild thought that Firefox might have a similar problem?

Re: using Norton 360: zombie processes

There was a problem with the Skype extension for Firefox and FF 3.0  - I forget the details now, but at some stage I got a beta version of the plugin from Skype which fixed the problem. The standard plugin is now at a later version to that beta and, yes, my Skype s/w is fully up-to-date, but thanks for the suggestion anyway.

Always good troubleshooting to eliminate ... and then of course when all possible solutions have been explored, try the impossible but I don't think you are there yet <s>

There's plenty of knowledgeable help here.

Re: using Norton 360: zombie processes

Hey guys,

I just did some quick testing and it appears that piclense was the problem in my setup, disabling it has killed the zombies

FF 3.0.1  and XP SP3.

Re: using Norton 360: zombie processes

Mike - Awesome to hear that worked for you. I think that list of OK ones might be useful for me while I try and eliminate things. I don't have the PicLens one on mine. Doing ok so far. No zombie process so far. In about a week I'm going to try enabling them all one at a time again to see if I can pinpoint the nasty one that does it occasionally for me.

Totally agree about the seriousness of the skype extension. It would be rather annoying for people who actually use the skype extension for firefox - I don't use it but I can imagine it would be rather frustrating!

Glad to hear that the extensions thing has worked for quite a few!
