Re: Child stops Norton Online Family by clicking ctrl+alt+del

Hi sunmade,

He probably deletes the Norton Safety Minder process after doing the CTRL+ALT+DEL.  Do you have Norton 360 or NIS installed on the PC? If you do, there is an option to prevent him from doing so.

If you don't have Norton security product installed on the PC,  after he did above, the Norton Safety Minder application detects this and sends an alert to the parent with message “Norton Safety Minder is not running.  This could be caused by a problem with the program, or else a user might have shut down a Norton Safety Minder component.  Please restart the computer.” If a child kills the Online Family service somehow, the service will restart every 5 minutes.

Thanks,

Katie

I have Norton 360 installed but what is that setting?  How do I stop my son from just killing the process.  He has a limited account but is somehow able to spend 3 hours on the machine when he's limited to 1.  I can check the logs later and it shows time limit reached - time limit reached - time limit reached over and over again but doesn't lock him out.

Re: Child stops Norton Online Family by clicking ctrl+alt+del

Hi Jst1MorCast,

It's Norton Tamper Protection under Settings in Norton 360.

When the time is up or during a curfew period, the child would get an extra 60 seconds plus another 60 seconds while displaying a warning message with 60 seconds counting down.  After that,  the child is logged out of his/her account.  The child is allowed to log back to the PC for 60 seconds and receive another warning message with 60 seconds counting down to finish whatever he/she was doing .  Later, the behavior is repeated for the 3rd time,  so the child gets about extra 6 minutes, then he/she wouldn't be able to log back to the PC without the email address and password of the Norton Online Family account.

What I’ve heard is some children login again & again (after the exact 6 minutes) using the few seconds right before the program logs them out.  One thing you can try is to add a password for the child’s Windows account, so when the child logs back onto the PC diligently each time, it would create more work for the child to do it every few seconds.

Thanks,

Katie

Re: Child stops Norton Online Family by clicking ctrl+alt+del

Hi KatieQ;

I don't know, how the product I purchased here is called. It's Norton-Antivirus 2012, which protects my PC for 1 year.

I already looked for an option in Norton Online Family, but couldn't find one.

My son has his own PC, where he is the Administrator. Could this be the problem ?

Thanks a lot for your help !!

Re: Child stops Norton Online Family by clicking ctrl+alt+del

Hi sunmade,

To avoid and limit the possibility to tamper/disable the system, please give non-administrative rights (limited or restricted) to your child’s  user account and keep the password for your Norton Online Family account away from the child.  Otherwise,  the child would have the ability to tamper the program.   Please also make sure the child doesn’t log onto the PC using a account that is not being monitored.

Thanks,

Katie

Re: Child stops Norton Online Family by clicking ctrl+alt+del

I have the same problem with a child holding CTRL+ALT+DEL.  It was mentioned that I could configure Norton360 to prevent this from happening on Norton Online Family.  What is the process?

Re: Child stops Norton Online Family by clicking ctrl+alt+del

Hi fhazelton,

Please make sure the Norton Tamper Protection under Settings is On in Norton 360, so a child can't kill a Norton process.

Thanks,

Katie
