I keep getting these message "28/08/11 12:00 : Norton Safety Minder's web browser monitoring component is either disconnected or disabled. Please restart the web browser or restart your computer"

Is this to do with the version of firefox I am using or has this nothing to do with my browser? It is frustrating as...

I am using firefox 3.6.20 as 4 & 5 do not support the norton toolbar.

Hi RMGX,

Norton Safety Minder is compatible with Firefox version 5 and prior versions.  Another reason that you receive the message is the Norton Safety Minder add-ons is turned off manually. 

Please go to the PC where Norton Safety Minder is installed, Launch Firefox (or IE), go to the tools menu and select add-ons, make sure that the Norton Safety Minder add-ons is enabled.  We will be adding a feature that prevents children disable the add-ons in a future update.

When I go to Firefox's Tools-Add-ons menu it shows safety minder as not being compatible with firefox 3.6.21.  Is there a different version of safety minder I should be using?  I believe mine is 2.2.0.28.

Could you post the message that shows Norton Safety MInder is not compatible with Firefox 3.6.21?

Norton Safety Minder 2.2.0.28 supports Firefox 4 and 5.1.

If so, how do I tell if I have it on my Child's computer?

I have been having this same problem and it is getting extremely frustrating. I had NSM installed on another desktop and it worked perfectly. We got a new computer a couple of weeks ago and this happens whenever my kids log on and access the internet. They ARE NOT manually disabling anything so I don't believe the fix you described has anything to do with it. They are able to visit websites that I have blocked also. This product is basically useless to me right now and I would really love to see a solution to this problem.

The current version of Norton Safety Minder is 2.2.0.40.  The update is compatible with Firefox 8.

To check if the add-ons is enabled, please check the browser(s) that your child uses to see if the Norton Safety Minder add-ons is enabled.  You can find it by clicking Tools -> Manage Add-ons.

Hi sjasan,

You mentioned "They are able to visit websites that I have blocked".  Please check if you have installed Norton Safety Minder (Is the NSM active in the system tray) and if you have associated your children's Windows accounts and their profiles online correctly.  

Even the Norton Safety Minder add-ons is disabled (Browser -> Tools -> Manage Add-ons) ,  the children still should get blocked when trying to access the blocked websites.

Hi Katie,

Yes, NSM is installed and is showing in the system tray. The accounts are associated correctly because I can view websites they visit but even that doesn't seem to be working properly because it seems to show only sites that are listed as "advertisement".

I have checked to see under tools if it is disabled and it is not. Even though the website is under blocked sites they are able to access it.

1. Have you tried to uninstall/reinstall Norton Safety Minder on the PC (you don't need to re-configure the house rules and settings for your accounts as they are saved on the NOF servers)?

2.  What security product(s) do you have on the PC?

3.  Please make sure the Parental Controls option under Control Panel is Disabled on the PC(Vista and Windows 7). Under Start/Control Panel/Parental Controls, you can find whether you have enabled the Parental Control for your child's User Account. Please Disable it.   If you have multiple parental control programs enabled on the PC, it might interfere with the performance of Norton Online Family.
