Norton Online Family - My Daughter Can Shut it off on her computer!!!

I have installed the Online Family Safety Minder on my daughter's computer, but it keeps getting disabled.  From what I have read, the user cannotdisable it without the password.  What am I doing wrong???

Re: Norton Online Family - My Daughter Can Shut it off on her computer!!!

HI biusm,

Please give non-administrative rights (limited or restricted) to your child’s  user account and keep the password for your Norton Online Family account away from the child.  Otherwise,  the child would have the ability to tamper the program.   Please also make sure the child doesn’t log onto the PC using a account that is not being monitored.

Thanks,

Katie

Thanks, but that is not the problem. She does not have administrator privileges and doesn't know the password... Anything else you can think of?

Thanks,

Mike

We have the same problem. Every so often I get an email that says Norton Family has been disabled. But no one else has the password. It seems to disable itself upon start-up.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Re: Norton Online Family - My Daughter Can Shut it off on her computer!!!

If you are using Firefox, have a look at the 9th post in this thread: http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Online-Family/FireFox-Support/td-p/495024 (in Firefox's menu bar select Tools->Addons then click on Extensions to see what is enabled). Your problem might be that NSM doesn't currently work with Firefox 7 so it is shut off by default. As a reminder of how "unsafe" my kids' PC is, the inappropriately named Norton Safety Minder continues to spam me with "disabled" emails every time they go online. At first I thought my kids were up to no good. Apparently a fix is on the way but it has been a long time coming. Symantec are not as responsive as I'd expect a professional s/w company to be to fix security s/w that I've paid for.

Re: Norton Online Family - My Daughter Can Shut it off on her computer!!!

I have the same question.  My son doesn't have admin rights, only uses profiles being monitored, and doesn't know my password.  Every now & then I get a message that Norton Minder has been disabled.  I don't know if it's due to a PC crash or hanky panky.  Sometimes my son says it happens when a game locks up and he has to do a CTL-ALT-DEL reboot. But that's not always the case.  Today I got "WDPlugIn.dll Norton Safety Minder is disconnected. Please reinstall the Norton Safety Minder program."

HELP!

Hi,

Please check out the link below to see how the program works when a child tries to tamper the system.  If the child finds a way to uninstall or disalbe Norton Safety Minder on the PC,  Norton Online Family either prevents them from doing it or sends an alert to the parents.

Re: Norton Online Family - My Daughter Can Shut it off on her computer!!!

We are using Windows Vista and I still keep getting emails stating our Safety Minder is off or has been disabled. My son does not have administrative rights and does not know the password. I even upgraded to pay for this service and it is not working any better than the free service. Please help. It is not turning his computer off when his time limit is reached either.

Re: Norton Online Family - My Daughter Can Shut it off on her computer!!!

Hi mommyschaefer,

Please make sure the Parental Controls option under Control Panel is Disabled on the PC. Click on Start Button/Control Panel/Parental Control. If you have enabled the Parental Control for your child's User Account. Please Disable it.

If you have multiple parental control programs enabled on the PC, it might interfere with the performance of Norton Online Family.

For time limitation, When the time is up or during a curfew period, the child would receive a message saying there are 60 seconds left.  After 60 seconds, the child is allowed to log back to the PC for another 60 seconds to finish whatever he/she was doing.  These behaviors can be repeated for three times,  so the child gets about extra 6 minutes, then he/she wouldn't be able to log back to the PC without the email address and password for the Norton Online Family account

Thanks,

Katie
