Hi Norton Community,
I've encountered a very puzzling problem. I had Norton Safety Minder installed on my PC, and had been using Google's Chrome browser with no issues for several weeks. Then yesterday I tried using my installed copy IE8 on my system, and I found that only secure HTTPS websites would load. Standard, non-secure websites (HTTP) would not load at all. I've run two full viruscans to check for malware, and both came up clean. I tried resetting IE's settings back all to default & deleted all personal files in the Advanced Preferences menu, and that didn't work. I even tried upgrading IE8 to IE9 to help fix things. Nothing worked.
I found on the Internet the tip that the command "netsh winsock reset" could reset some networking settings, and this appeared to restore IE's ability to surf non-secure websites temporarily, after the required reboot. But after a few minutes after the boot completed, IE was broken again. :(. I suspected Norton's Safety Minder was at fault. So, I uninstalled Safety Minder, did the required reboot, and voila! I could surf in IE again, w/ no issues. And just to confirm my suspicions, I just reinstalled a fresh copy of Safety Minder from the Norton website just now, and yep, IE is now crippled again.
Any ideas, Norton pros?
Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
Norton Safety Minder 2.1.0.37
Internet Explorer 8.? and 9 Beta 9.0.7930.16406
Thanks,
Mike

Hi m6soto,
Thanks for the post. What security product(s) do you have on the PC?

Hi KatieQ,
I've got Avast! Free Antivirus, v5.0.677 and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware v1.50 installed.

Hi m6soto,
It could be a compatibility issue. Please check the link below where shows the security products that the program is not compatible with.
Also, I've seen other users providing a workaround for the compatibility issue, please check it out at
Thanks,
Katie

Thanks KatieQ! Disabling Avast's Webguard, as noted in the links you provided solved it immediately.
Thanks!
