Hi all,
I just wanted to ask a question that's bugging me with the Norton Online Safety.
I find that sometimes the system blocks sites that are allowed or a child has been accessing fine and then gets blocked.
Looking into this the house rules page it lists the DOMAIN NAME of the site and says its Uncategorised, however when you look at the online report it is using the IP ADDRESS.
I can understand the IP address being blocked but why is it the system can resolve this in the front end but has problems behind the scenes.
I've checked the URL on the site and that points to the domain name, in fact it I try the same link again it sometimes works.
It doesn't happen all the time perhaps 1 click in 20-30 when changing domains, but is driving the kids mad.
I do notice in the logs it keeps reporting:
- Norton Safety Minder's web browser monitoring component is either disconnected or disabled. Please restart the web browser or restart your computer
- Vista Parental Controls may interfere with the enforcement of house rules and should be removed from the child's device
However Parental controls in Windows 7 is turned off and the browser helper is enabled.
Any ideas?

Hi TrevorWhite,
You said "Looking into this the house rules page it lists the DOMAIN NAME of the site and says its Uncategorised". Can you please tell us where the "house rules page" locates, the pop-up screen after selecting "View My house Rules" from the Norton Safety Minder icon?
For the message "Norton Safety Minder's web browser monitoring component...", when you see the message next time, please check the browser that your child uses to see if the Norton Safety Minder Extension is enabled. You can find it by clicking Tools -> Manage Add-ons in IE if IE is being used.
For message "Vista Parental Controls may interfere...", how many computers do you have that are associated with your NOF account? You can find it out by checking Settings -> Profile online. Do you have any other parental control programs enabled on the PC?
Thanks,
Katie

When I say about the house rules, I mean what the child sees, the web page with the dog and the go back button, it says the site is uncatgorised even though it let the child in earlier. When I login to the parent section instead of seeing say www.google.co.uk, I'll see http://173.194.66.94, if I click the link it'll goto google. So somewhere Norton has looked at the IP address instead of the domain name. It doesn't happen too often, but it does happen.
I've checked the machines and the safety filter is enabled in Add-ons. I do have a question about the browser add-on, what does it do? As I notice if the add-on is disabled the firewall does still appear to block correctly?
I have 2 PCs protected by NOF, none have the Windows 7 parental controls enabled, it did used to and I used to use Microsoft Family Safety but those have since been removed.
Thanks.

Hi TrevorWhite,
Thanks for the reply.
I'll report the issue that website is blocked as uncategorized and display IP address for domain name to the team.
Even though the Norton Safety Minder add-on is turned off, the program still monitors and blocks websites.
What monitors and blocks websites is Norton Safety Minder (not just the add-on for Norton Safety Minder)
How often do you get the message that "Vista Parental Controls may interfere..."? How about you reboot both PCs? I found the link below from Microsoft website, please check it out to see it could help.

Thanks.
I've got a question if the system still blocks pages with the Browser Helper Off what does the helper actually do?

TrevorWhite,
The Norton Safety Minder Extension is for video and social networking monitoring.
Thanks,
Katie
