Norton Family

I have been using online family for a couple of weeks now to monitor my 3 kids.

I think it is a good program *in principle* but the fact that they can login for a few minutes  during the curfew time makes it all

bad. Everyday I see  that they have logged in repeatedly during the curfew, sometimes 20 times (!) to cover one entire hour.

They are smart enough to logout before the countdown is over so they can repeat the procedure over and over.

I had to disable all the kids and went back to the (much more primitive) Mac parental control, but I had no choice.

A curfew is a curfew and this does not seem to be true for Norton.

I was considering buying the Premier version but since I assume it will have the same flaw I certainly will not.

If there is any way to circumvent this, please let me know.

I will not use Norton online fanily until this "feature" is totally disabled (should be easy no?)

PS. Kids are on Mac with OS 10.6.8 if it makes any difference.

I"ll report this to the NSM Mac team, so they can check into this.  In the meantime, can you add a long password for the child’s account, so when the child logs back onto the Mac diligently each time, it would create more work for the child to do so?

Hello,

as you well know this is not a Mac issue it is the same for Mac or Windows.

And the long password will not change a thing, maybe decrease the time of 20 seconds? ;)

Currently the password in question is 14 characters already!

Unless the curfew behavior is changed I cannot use NOF neither the basic nor the premius version.

Same is true for many other parents judging from all the entries I have read.

When the time is up or during a curfew period, the child would get an extra 60 seconds plus another 60 seconds while displaying a warning message with 60 seconds counting down.  After that,  the child is logged out of his/her account.  The child is allowed to log back to the PC for 60 seconds and receive another warning message with 60 seconds counting down to finish whatever he/she was doing .  Later, the behavior is repeated for the 3rd time,  so the child gets about extra 6 minutes, then he/she wouldn't be able to log back to the PC without the email address and password of the Norton Online Family account.

this is your standard answer and it is exactly where the problem is!

As long as the kids logout 10 seconds before the time is up

they can continue to log in as many times as they want.

Are you planning to fix this issue and totally disallow login during curfew?

I'll be sure pass your concern to the team....However, if a 11-year-old doesn't save the homework  he or she has been doing when receiving three warning messages, do we just simply log him/her out and let the child lose all the work that has been done?

Yes! Or you do what the Mac parental control does in this case.

You give a 15 minute warning, then a 10 minute warning, then a 5, then a 1. Plenty of time to save the homework!

And also if you are so worried, you can give 1 time re-login, but no more.

As I said, the way it is done now makes it unusuable for most parents

(as you have seen from all the requests/complains you get on this point).

Will a request for enhancement  like this be acted upon quickly or probably not?

P.S.to my previous answer

I did a test today and trid to login in my child account during curfew. Sometimes I log out before the countdown ends, sometimes I let Norton stop me.

Here is the acticity report. Note that I did not have any problems loging in more that 3 times! So even your standard response seems to have problems. Kids are smarter (and faster!) than what Norton thinks.
