Re: 18.5.0.125 Lockups

[ Edited ]

Hi drw,

Can you confirm if you tried booting into SAFE mode and uninstalling from there?

If you have tried this and have still not been successful, the next recourse is to use the Norton removal tool.

Before we try that are you interested in trying the "patch" Symantec has to see if it resolves the problem?

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Product-Update-Information-18-5-0-125...

I had this problem myself and the fix is working on my computer.

If you do not want to try the fix and you are not able to uninstall NIS via SAFE mode, you can use the Norton removal tool as follows:

Download the removal tool from here. Then run the removal tool twice with a reboot in between each run. You can download NIS from the links provided by Venkat earlier. The removal tool can also be used in Safe mode if you have problems getting it to run in normal mode.

This can be downloaded from a different computer if you are not able to connect to the internet on the problem computer. in this case you can save to a USB flash drive, CD, etc and run it from there on the problem computer.

Please do let us know how it goes. We will help you get through this.

Best wishes.

Allen

Re: 18.5.0.125 Lockups

Exactly what I'm experiencing...  I also NIS does NOT automatically update the virus definition files or the program. I have to do it manually.

Re: 18.5.0.125 Lockups

Okay, here is an update on my situation:

I was unable to do anything with my computer after 18.5 was installed- I could not get into control panel, could not get on internet, could not do a CTL ALT DEL to get into task manager- basically anything I tried just sat there frozen on my computer- I also had problems shutting the PC down- would get stuck every time…..

It took me about 30 minutes to find a phone number to call for tech support, but I found it, and after talking to a tech support person, and then being passed to a case manager, we finally were able to uninstall NIS 18.5, then install 18.1.

I was on the phone for about 3 hours.

I THINK that has fixed my problem, but I won’t know for certain until I get back home tonight (it was 3 AM when I got off the phone with tech support and was too tired to do anything else)

Tim-

I think it might be the first reboot this month.

Today was the first time I ever saw the notice to reboot and it had settings to "remind me later" with the longest time I could set being 24 hours.

Sorry If I'm mistaken, but could the patch have been applied a few days ago and no notice given until today?

Dave

Hi Dave,

Automatic LiveUpdate downloaded the patch and waited for you to reboot. This is the reason why it didn't apply until the reboot. The notice that you needed a reboot was set to a few days after the download so that it could potentially just apply at an existing reboot that you would perform rather than force you to do one at an inconvenient time.

Are you experiencing the locking issue?

Re: 18.5.0.125 Lockups

Just want to add my PC to the list with these issues.  Beginning on Friday, December 10th, my Windows 7 PC would no longer shutdown.  Microsoft Outlook was also not functional.  My external USB HDD was no longer recognized on start-up.  I finally remembered there was some update that Norton took upon itself to peform as a desktop icon for NIS was present when I got home from work on Friday that was not there before.  Eventually I thought to un-install NIS and re-install using the original downloader that I had from last month.  Since then my PC has been behaving normally.

I am concerned that this happened.  I only now discovered these discussion groups.  I see they would have shed some light on this right away.  I wish there was a better support avenue than this.  A courtesy email would have been nice once Symantec became aware of this matter which it appears it did know about by Saturday.

Is there some way to turn off product updates and allow only virus definition updates?  I can find only one option that seems to disable all updates including definitions.

Thanks.

Hi robkarp,

Welcome to the Norton Community.

Unfortunately the only way to shut off program updates is to disable Live Update in Computer Settings but unfortunately this also disables Pulse Updates (definitions).

There are two Norton Ideas thread you might want to take a look at and if you agree I would recommend that you lend your voice in support of the ideas.

One would treat Live Update and Pulse Updates independantly where one can disable Live Update while still receiving pulse updates. It would also allow for live update sessions to be scheduled.

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Product-Ideas/Allow-Live-Update-to-be-Scheduled/idi-p/291582

The next one would address a situation exactly like what we had with 18.5 which would really boil down to a seperate way to disable major program updates. The first idea (mine) addresses only part of this. This second one addresses it even further.

The problem with disabling Live Updates (even if changes were made to the program so that pulse updates were still ON) are as follows:

  • If your computer is OFF or hibernating, etc you would miss out on the pulse updates and would need to let Live update run either automatically or run it manually. But then you get back to the original problem where if a new major update were available it would get pulled down when live update is run.
  • Very minor incremental program updates come out periodically (some even needed for definitions) which does not result in a change to the version number. By turning off live update you would miss out on these also. I do not know of any case where these minor incremental program updates has caused any problems for anyone.

So this second idea really addresses this scenario the best.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen

Re: 18.5.0.125 Lockups

All,

If any of you are having this issue are are able to run LiveUpdate, please do so. An update called "Norton 2011 SRTSP Settings" will download and contains the fix.

It is possible that Automatic LiveUpdate may have already downloaded this in the background.

Re: 18.5.0.125 Lockups

Hi guys,

I've been following this thread since lats week when I was lucky enough to get the NIS update 18.5.0.125. Since I wasn't registered I couldn't contribute, but the last reply by  Tim_Lopez forced me to act!. I can confirm that after running the LiveUpdate I got the "Norton 2011 SRTSP Settings" patch.  I restarted my laptop and everything appears to be fine now. I forgot to mention that I experienced every single issue mentioned in the first post of this thread. After the application of the patch everything seems to work fine now (i.e. NIS settings, no slowdowns, no hangs, etc.). Fingers crossed that the patch works!!! Regards,

Re: 18.5.0.125 Lockups

So what will happen to those of us who were affected by 18.5.0.125 and uninstalled it in favor of the original version 18.1.0.37?  Will we be recieving 18.5.0.125 with the included patch or just sticking with 18.1.0.37 until a higher version is released than 18.5.0.125?
