Activation and re-activation - needs work...

This is more a basical thought than a question....

I have 9 PCs and frequently junk one and get a new one. Or do changes like new HDD, SSD, System, etc. On all of them I run NIS, NU and Ghost. With regularly purchased activation keys.

It is however a pain that since I max out the activations I have to go to chat to have the count reset to be able to install on a new machine replacing an old one, or new installation due to change to a bigger HDD or an SSD or new System etc...

So it would be VERY nice if there was a way to auto-manage your amount of installs. Maybe in user account where you can reset the count with an explanation given and you can then re-activate the product on a new machine, hard drive, system.

Just a thought.

Hi aydin1954,

Actually I think I can help you out here - to ask is to receive! :smileyhappy:

From some other posts from you I believe you have NIS 2012, please correct me if this is wrong. There is a new feature called Norton Management in which you can manage and adjust the number of installations.

Unfortunately this does not work for Norton Ghost or Norton Utilities however.

You can log into your Norton Account and then click Norton Management under Norton applications. Or alternatively you can go directly to the Norton Management website. You will need to first register your Norton Products.

Once that is done, if you for example no longer want to use NIS or NAV on one of your computers you would ideally deactivate Norton on that computer while the computer is still connected to the Internet. You would do this by clicking on the Trash Can symbol next to the product name. This will initiate remote uninstall. If the computer you are removing Norton from is connected to the Internet this will uninstall Norton from that computer and add 1 activation to your remaining activations.

Even if the computer cannot be connected to the Internet (such as HD crash, etc) you can stil do this by clicking on that same trash can symbol. It will attempt remote uninstall which will fail but after 5-15 minutes or so the activation should free up for use on another computer. If that computer were to ever be connected to the Internet again, it will pretty quickly realize (after connecting to the Symantec server) that that copy of Norton has been disabled and it will no longer function.

Once you see that an activation has been added to your account you click on the trash can symbol next to the machine name to remove that device from your Norton Management account. You can then activate and register the new computer.

To check when the number of activations has been increased you can click on the More Info link on the right hand side of the Norton Management window OR you can check in your Norton Account. Note that the number of activations shown in your Norton Account does NOT automatically refresh even if you refresh the page, you must log out and back in to your Norton Account to see the increase in the number of activations.

More on Norton Management.

Also, do be aware that in order to use this feature, it will require installing the Norton Management application. You will be prompted to install this when you attempt to use the service for the first time.

I have tested this feature pretty extensively so I am very familiar with how it works.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have more questions on this.

Best wishes.

Allen

Re: Activation and re-activation - needs work...

Thank you very much Allen for the reply and the useful information. I will definitely try it.

I shall point out that I said "On all of them I run NIS, NU and Ghost." which pre-answers your question... :smileywink:

At least we have it for NIS.... BADLY needed for NU too.... Ghost activates only locally so no need for this unless Symantec changes it to a remote activation too.

Re: Activation and re-activation - needs work...

Adding to Allen's info about Norton Management ..

The other newer feature which I think applies to other than 2012 products is that the MyNortonAccount in which you have activated your Norton Product (I don't know about other than NIS NAV and N360 appearing there) is that there can be a Download button against the entry and if you download to a computer which it recognizes then the download is not only uptodate but pre-activated.without notching up an increase in the activation count. At least that's how I understand it.

But let's hope that Norton Management takes in all activated products before long .... it will save Norton a lot of staff time ....

I saw that you have NIS but I did not know what version. The Norton Management only works for 2012 version as far as remote uninstall goes.

I subsequently looked up some other posts from you and saw that you have NIS 2012. :smileywink:

Please let me know how you like it.

Not sure what to say about NU. I've had occasion over time to reinstall this several times and I've never yet had a problem with it failing to activate after things like replacing a HD. Have you actually experienced this problem with NU? If so, under what conditions?

Thanks and best wishes.

Re: Activation and re-activation - needs work...

ok looks interesting hope it works... put 6 machines on it. At the moment I am not actively using 3 so for now let it be maybe add them in the future.

the interface is a bit too cute.... and not very practical if you have many machines. Would like a more simple and practical one like a simple table so you can have the full overview with keys etc in one look. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Activation and re-activation - needs work...

Hi aydin1954,

At lesat it works and won't have to involve Customer Service when you decommision a computer. :smileyhappy:

Feel free to suggest changes in the Product Suggestions board. Symantec does listen to these suggestions, in fact that is why they implemented the Norton Management feature to begin with. :smileyhappy:

The ability to free up an activation when a computer has crashed, been stolen or whatever is a pretty common request for help on the forums here.

Best wishes.

aydin1954:

After NM is installed, you can choose to hide the icon by right-clicking on it.

Allen, lovely explanation :-)

Re: Activation and re-activation - needs work...

I wonder as to why the service guy didn't mention this new feature to me the first time I contacted in regards to activation problems. I also removed NIS from 2 of my PC's and wanted to install on 2 new PC's. This was only 2 weeks ago.

Anyway, I think this was a much needed feature. Other programs have a deactivation button, which more or less does the same thing
