Anyone out there? I could really use some help.

Hi Everyone,

For about a week now I have encountered a problem. The video playback on my laptop has become very slow. Videos on the NHL website and YouTube are now very slow to load and take a long time to play. Also, the time it takes to download things has also become very slow and take a lot longer than they should. I have tried everything I can think of (deleting cookies & temp files, changing the password on my router and even uninstalled and reinstalled web browsers) I really don't know what to do anymore. Nothing I do can fix the problem, any suggestions?

Hello Kevin,

Have you exceeded your download quota for the month? If you have, then your ISP may have reduced your download speed for the rest of the month. This would result in the symptoms you describe.

Thank you both. I didn't even know that your ISP could control how much you download, is that even allowed?  I really don't download a ton of programs, just a few things here and there. Just downloaded the new Abode and it downloaded pretty quick, but still a bit slow. After Adobe downloaded, I tried to watch a video and its' playback was still very slow. Everything is up to date, which is why I am having a hard time understanding the problem.

Does your internet plan have a monthly download quota, say for example, 20GB per month? If it does, and you have exceeded your 20GB quota for the month, then what you ISP may do instead of charging you excess usage fees is slow your connection down instead. This will have a direct impact on your video playback because the download speed will be much slower. While you may not download a lot of programs, if you watch a lot of videos online then you can quickly use up your download quota.

If you do have a monthly plan with a download quota like this, then you need to log into your ISP account and check how much you've used for the month. This will help us determine whether or not we can rule this out as the cause for the slowdown.

I have never seen any sort of data plan on my cable/internet bill. It's just really weird that this has been going on. And there is nothing wrong with the desktop computer in my home.

Hi KevinHaines,

First, visit an internet speed test site to check the actual download speeds you are getting (normally, you will get a result that is just slightly less than the advertised speed that your ISP promises under your contract).  If the speed is low, turn off the PC, power cycle both the modem and the router.  Turn everything off for a minute, then turn on the modem and let it synch, then the router, then the computer.  Retest your speed.  If the speed is OK, then the issue may be in the browser or Flash Player.
