Hey just installed NIS 2010. I first updated it and it was fine. But automatic updates cannot be scheduled. I mean a new database is release after about 4 hours. It should not be updating after 4 hours. Why do I have to run LiveUpdate manually.
I then learn about Pulse updates that checks for updates every few minutes. But when I last updated, its yesterday and its 9 hours ago. Neither does Norton tell me if there is an update available nor does it automatically update. Even when I run LiveUpdate, it say that updates are not required.
If it does not update for so long, Norton shoul not notify that the product is outdated. As in other security suites, the normal update time is 4 hours and there are automatic update options. In fact when installed NIS 2010 for the first time and the first update was not yet done, it said that LiveUpdate was run days ago but there was nothing suggesting for update and showin that databases were out of date.
In norton, is there the option to automatically scan an external drive as it is connected to the computer.

Hello Heetesh
Welcome to the Norton Users Discussion Forum
What was your previous security program and how was it uninstalled? Do you now have any other real time security programs installed? What is the version number of NIS 2010 that is showing when you look at about?

I'm not sure if I understand the problem here. The program will update as soon as it needs to be updated.

I have NIS 2010 v17.5.0.127 and I previously used Kaspersky.
One another thing, Norton usually opens itself and the icon just appears in the taskbar of my windows 7. I mean not the small icon to the left but usually the one that appears when we open a program. Most of the time it happens if I play game or open an application.

Hello Heetesh
Your problems may be due to the improper removal of your Kaspersky security program. Using add/remove or the equivalent of that in Win 7 is not enough to completely remove the deep roots of a security program You also need to use the Kaspersky removal tool a couple of times with a reboot after each run of the program. I would suggest using the Kaspersky removal tool and then you may have to reinstall NIS again to get a clean install of that.
http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208279463 I believe that is the link for the Kaspersky removal tool.
To reinstall NIS 2010, you will have to use the Norton Removal tool a couple of times too and reboot after each use. The Norton removal tool will remove all Norton products. Please save your Identity safe information using the program to back that up.
You can download the Norton Removal tool from
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view
Please pick the proper Norton product that you want to remove. Also please be aware that it will remove all Norton products, so back up Identity Safe using the program to back that up. Also please have your product key handy.
Then you can get NIS 2010 from this link.
You can download 2010 NIS from here
http://www.norton.com/nis10
Please remember to run live update after install to make sure all updates are received and then please reboot.
Please come back and let us know how you made out. Thanks and good luck.

Thanks for the reply.
Another thing I want to know. Why in the main window of NIS 2010, threre is a red cross. Whenever I restart my PC,there is an option to 'Fix Now'. When clicked, a quick scan is performed that detects some cookies and removes it. But the alert state remains.
And also the taskbar icon in the right keeps blinking, one time its yellow and one time its blue with two arrows pointing to the right.

Hello Heetesh
All of these things could be indicative of a faulty installation of your Norton program due to the incomplete removal of your prior security program.

What needs to be fixed when you click fix now?

I don't know what has to be fixed. Every I click 'Fix Now', a windows opens for fixing and a window performs a quick scan. And for the icon in the taskbar, is the blinking normal?
Every time I restart I can the alert to fix now and Norton is always in the red alert state even if I follow its instructions or I update.
If I uninstalled Norton, will all the updates that I downloaded for the first be lost. It is large at first and will take time to download with my internet connection. Is there any way to save the updates and then use it afterwards?

Hello Heetesh
If you use the link given before, it will be for the newest version, not like if you were installing it from a CD out of a boxed version.. There would be some updates to get the latest updates which would be updates that came out after the latest installer was made. You would have to use live update and get the updates, but then you should have a working program as a result without the errors. Saving the updates may not be a good idea if it is possible because they may have been corrupted and may be contributing to your problems also.
