Hi!
The other day one of my family members uninstalled Norton Internet Security to be able to install a new version of Norton 360. But we got a big problem after the uninstallation. The computer's CD/DVD driver won't recognize any kind of CD or DVD even if they work on other computers. A lot of programs have also been deleted after uninstallation but at least I managed to get the internet back on track. But I can't reinstall the deleted programmas without my CD driver.
The computer says the driver works perfect in the Device manager and I've tried fix tool, GEAR software, microsoft fix, restore the computer, etc but nothing seems to work. I really hope someone can help me with this! The only thing left is to reinstall everything on the computer.
Thanks for reading!

Hi Yowsah
Have you been able to install/reinstall - Norton product.
Here's a page of download links for Norton products.
So, you can have security software while you try to resolve CD/DVD issue.
Since you've tried all the obvious fixes.
Do you know how NIS was uninstalled. The procedure used...
R U running any other real time security programs.
Please advise Operting System info.
Hopefully others will chime in shortly...

Hi Yowsah,
Welcome to the Norton Community Forum!
Out of curiosity, are you running (or have installed) any CD/DVD/BR suites like Roxio Creator or the like?
If so and the other solutions above didn't work, could you uninstall the program and test again?
(Only do this if you have the software available to reinstall!)
TIA,
Atomic_Blast :)

I had the same issue with my computer. I had Norton 360 and went to renew with the basic version of Norton and the CD driver quit working. Fortunately I was able to get it working again with the restore program but when I tried a second time to install Norton, I had a bunch of problems - the biggest being I lost the capability to use all of my Microsoft office applications. I have not been able to get them to work - the shortcuts are all still there but the programs won't run.

Operating system info:
Windows Vista
Service pack 2
Creator: Dell
Model: XPS XPS_630I
Processor: Intel (R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz 2.67 GHz
Memory (RAM): 3.00 GB
Memory (Hardrive): 688 GB
I don't really know the details about the uninstalling process since I wasn't here at the moment. But I heard today the computer froze during the uninstallation, in the end the computer had to be turned off. (Which probably wasn't the best idea)
I managed to get Norton 360 from the Norton website, so it's now installed and works perfectly. But a lot is still corrupted in many of the programs files. Especially all the microsoft office, word, powerpoint, etc doesn't work at all.
And about the Roxio Creator program, I checked this and funny enough it didn't work either but I managed to reinstall it but the CD/DVD drive has still the same problem. It seems like a lot of programs which I got from the start to the computer are corrupted, I have managed to reinstall a lot of them like, dell support, dell update, etc. And I tried with all those links that have been mention in this topic and it still doesn't want to work.

I don't know if my CD driver has anything to do with this but a program called Volpanlu.exe stops working everytime I start the computer. I googled a bit and tried to fix it with Advanced PC Tweaker and didn't work. Any clues?

Hi Yowsah,
Just curious what your deifintion of restore the computer is?
System Restore?
Use Restore disk or recovery partition?
Just wondering with everything misssing programwise if you restored to a point prior to their install or prior to needed updates to those programs not being included in the restore?
In regards to your volpanlu.exe this info may help in your tracking it down:
Volpanlu.exe is a Volume Control Panel from Creative Technology Ltd belonging to Xi-Fi Creative Sound Utilities.
The file is usually found in Program Files\creative\sound blaster x-fi\volume panel folder.

Yes, System restore, a previous state to a time when all the programs worked perfectly. Since I can't use my CD driver then it's impossible to install my backup files from Dell, since they all are CDs. I've tried System Restore several times on different dates, this probably doesn't work because everytime I start the computer it says something like "Couldn't Restore the computer, try again". It worked to restore the computer the first time I did this, but later on it didn't want to restore to any kind of previous state, no matter what date I choosed.
Thank you! I will check volpanlu again, but probably this is one of many progams that have been corrupted. Maybe the best idea is to reinstall the whole computer to fabric settings.

Is NIS still installed?
If so you must disable Tamper Protection in order to use system restore and that may corrupt your NIS install. However, it works and gets your other programs back - we can always attack NIS reinstall at that point in time.
Settings>General>Product Security > Tamper Protection
