Can I save older NSW?

Hey all,

I was ready to walk away from Norton until I heard all the good things about NIS2009, so I dove in today.

I know that installation can be trying when you have older Norton apps on the computer, but I would like to keep my SystemWorks (vers 11.0.2) and it's Norton Utilities (vers 19.0.1.8).  I had installed a newer NAV (vers 15.0.0.5.8) from a standalone package, which has just expired, and I don't know how integrated these have become. Will I be able to retain the Utilities if I use NRT? Do I really need NRT??

I'm asking before I begin because I'd like to get it right the first time.

Thanks in advance

Re: Can I save older NSW?

The Norton Removal Tool will remove everything Norton -- no choices. It is meant primarily to deal with situations that have gone wrong so you can uninstall just NSW using Remove Programs (from recollection it may give you a choice of a complete uninstall or just to uninstall individual elements whichwould allow you to uninstall the NAV element in it.

Do you have your installation media for your NSW? If so go ahead and uninstall everything; install the AntiVIrus you want and then reinstall NSW but make sure you use Custom Install and deselect the AntiVIrus element.

But you are using really old versions of both. Why not splurge for the Bundle of NSW V12 Basic (no AV) and NIS 2009 and get the new high speed version of NIS (and so of NAV).

Re: Can I save older NSW?

Hi QVideo,

There is no need to use NRT until/unless you face any issues during installation or after installation. Go Ahead and uninstall the Norton AntiVirus 2008(version 15.0) through Add/remove programs(Windows XP) or Products & Features(Windows Vista). Then install NIS 2009. After completing the installation, run LiveUpdate from NIS 2009 first and then run LiveUpdate from NSW 2008(version 11.0). You may need to run LiveUpdate separately because the NIS 2009 uses a new LiveUpdate engine. Also, run LiveUpdate repeatedly until you see the message that no more updates are available. Let us know the results.

Wishing you a very Happy New Year!

Re: Can I save older NSW?

Thank you both. The installation went smoothly. I used the Windows add/remove to get rid of NAV and then installed NIS09. No probs. I guess my fear of using NRT was unfounded ( as I really didn't need it).

huwyngr, I did think to get the new engine that comes with NIS09 but I'm pretty comfortable with the Utilities in my old NSW. I prefer saving a buck right now.

Thanks again.

Re: Can I save older NSW?

If your version of NSW is 2006 through 2008 and it is EITHER the standard or premier version (not the version titled basic), you are entitled to a free upgrade to NSW 2009.  You can check this out at:  upgrades.  There are a few new features in 2009.  You will need to use the same activation key for the new version that you used for the older version.

[ Edited ]

NSW 12 (2009) is still not available on update site.

I downloaded NSW 12 trial version then used my current product key to change it from Trial to Activated.

Good thinking!  That is an acceptable alternative way to active an appropriate upgrade.
