Re: Can't Log Into My Norton Account with NIS 2011

Hi Gorpy1,

Our responses crossed. :smileysurprised:

I got an "unavailable" message a couple of times too a few minutes ago. Are you still getting it?

I think there is just a temporary Symantec server issue, perhaps intermittent.

Best wishes.

Allen

I need to comment on the article entitled "Fix this Annoying Security Warning in IE 8"  in a previous link.  Excuse me, but this is a security warning.  It is supposed to be annoying.  The article states "It basically means that the secure (https) web page that you are trying to open contains images and other elements that are hosted on a non-https location. They call it mixed content."  Yes, but this is an oversimplification that completely ignores the reason for having a security warning in the first place.  How do you know if it is only the images that are not secure?  It could also mean that the form on the page that you are merrily entering your password, or other sensitive information, into may not be encrypted.  Without this warning, you have no clue that parts of the page, which could potentially include the data entry parts, are insecure. Usually mixed content is just as the article states, which is simply the result of bad web page design. and the alert can be bypassed for sites that you fully trust.  But the notice could also be the only thing alerting you that you might be about to enter your sensitve information at a phishing site, or otherwise completely in the clear.  I would not recommend disabling this alert globally or permanently.

Re: Can't Log Into My Norton Account with NIS 2011

Hello

I also just got the mixed content warning and I agree with SOJ. Apparently, Symantec is doing some maintenance on the site I would venture a guess. I don't think that the mixed content warning should be disabled. Yes, it is annoying, but it is there for a reason, to warn against potential problems with a site. Think of coming to a sign that warns there is a railroad crossing coming up. Sure, it's annoying to have to slow down or perhaps wait for a train to go by. The sign is there for a reason, to prevent cars and people to try and go around the railroad things that come down to warn that there is a train coming. There have been many fatalities that result from ignoring that sign. Imagine how many more there would be if there was no sign. The same thing could happen if the mixed content warning is turned off. It's there for a reason, just like a full page block occurs when you go to a bad site.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view.

Hi SOJ,

In my personal experience I've never seen this warning present an actual problem as it is most commonly due to webpage design issues. Agreed it can be a problem in some cases but I have yet to see it.

Where I would definitely be more concerned is getting this warning on sensitive websites such as banking, credit card, etc. These types of websites are by definition supposed to be https only and if you get this warning on those sites then there is a potential for your highly sensitive information to be seen by others.

Gorpy1, here is an article that explains what this warning means:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee264315(v=vs.85).aspx

An alternative for websites which are 100% trusted, would be to add individual sites to the "Trusted Sites" list in IE and make the change for "Mixed Content" handling there instead of the general "Internet" zone.

Gorpy1, I would recommend that you change the Internet zone back to either "Prompt" or "Disable" and then if you desire add Norton to the "Trusted" zone and make the change for Mixed Content there. Just remember to only add sites to this trusted list which you have absolute confidence in and trust 100%. Don't just add sites to this list every time you see this warning message.

Allen
