Can't activate NIS 2010 after upgrading from NIS 2009.

I've tried every suggestion that is on this forum and still I get that bloody "Cannot connect to the server" crap.

I'm at my wits end and I don't know what to do. The entire problem is a double-edged blade to me as I have to install this on my laptop too.

My product key for NIS 2009 is still valid and I still have 406 days left for my subscription.

Hi Mr_Furious,

Please do the following:

Go to "Folder options" in Control Panel, click on "View" and check "Show hidden files and folders".

Then start Vista in safe mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly on boot-up.

Then navigate to C:\ProgramData\Norton. You will find a directory called 00000082. Please rename it to 00000082.ori.

Reboot your computer (it should boot into normal mode).

Open the NIS console, and the activation should work - insert your product key.

Instructions courtesy of erevo.

Please post back to say if this works.

EDIT: Added step concerning "Folder options".

I have XP. There is no ProgramData folder. What folder so I need to change in XP?

Did you do this:

Go to "Folder options" in Control Panel, click on "View" and check "Show hidden files and folders". Program Data is hidden, so you've got to "unhide" it first.

You've got XP? Sorry, just read that now...Hang on, the filepath varies in that case...

Already done that and no programdata folder. That folder is only for Vista, not XP.

This is the path for XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton

Hang on...info coming, am checking path for XP....

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data

Sorry about that :-) I've got Vista and no other XP computer at home.

Lol, you already found it.

Okay, so here are the full instructions again, this time for XP:
Go to "Folder options" in Control Panel, click on "View" and check "Show hidden files and folders".

Then start XP in safe mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly on boot-up.

Then navigate to  C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton.

You will find a directory called 00000082. Please rename it to 00000082.ori.

Reboot your computer (it should boot into normal mode).

Open your Norton product, and the activation should work - insert your product key.

Thanks, that worked. 1 comp down, 1 to go.

So glad it worked for you :-) Sorry again about the XP/Vista mess, I have now written separate instructions for XP and Vista.

Re: Can't activate NIS 2010 after upgrading from NIS 2009.

Thanks again. i did the same for my laptop, and it worked too. Symantec really has to get on the ball and fix this. It's a total shame that they released NIS 2010 without full testing.
