Cant launch Norton AV 2009

With previous versions of nav i could launch nav by going to taskmanager goto new task browse to the correct exe click ok all was good now i cant with 2009, previous version was 2007.

So icant get NAV to open launch from the desktop shortcut the programs menu or from the NAV folder itself.

I can get NAV to launch with a restart of my computer but NAV is dependent on RunDLL32.exe which doesnt make

any sense to me.

So what i really need to know is what is the exact name of the Norton Anti Virus executive app i need to run?

Dear mods please dont move this post to the Norton Ghost forum i dont have Norton Ghost.

Some one has to know the exact name of the executable i need to run.

This has been an ongoing problem since updating to v2009 product.

Also any Norton programs i attempt to shut down with taskmanager denies me access to the operation.

Re: Cant launch Norton AV 2009

For NAV 2009, the executable responsible for the user interface is uistub.exe. You can check it from the RUN command:

C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Engine\16.x.x.x\uistub.exe

(where 16.x.x.x is your engine number/version number of NAV 2009)

Hello getalittlehalp

When you installed your Norton System Works program, did you use the Norton Removal Tool 2 times with a reboot after each run of it before you installed NSW 2009? It sounds like you didn't get a clean install of your System Works program. What version is the NAV part of System works now? You should not be starting programs via task manager on a routine basis. Have you just installed Norton System Works 12 now?

i use either the run or taskmanager to restart or kill progs but i havent had any success shutting down norton apps lately or ending explorer.exe (when necessary without errors) plus i prefer selective start up of windows but service pack 3 doesnt like that and it usually does something to my pc to make start windows normally after awhile.

@ Yogesh Mohan-  Thanks i try that the next time the NAV UI fails to load

Please note image for problem i am trying to explain

BTW yogesh all the uistub.exe launches is a norton support window, if i attempt to shut down the rundll32.exe(s) the norton tray crashes along with windows explorer. Before with version 2007 of NAV/NSW i didnt have that problem.

Also i find i cannot run windows in selective start up mode with v2009.

I find it such a hassle that all these programs are all so co-dependent on each other.

All i want is the AV to run smoothly and successfully in the background and its not.

Well anyway someone let me know the magic word/proccess to solving this issue please

Re: Cant launch Norton AV 2009

I am getting the sense that you are talking about the program itself and not the user interface.  NAV 2009 cannot be stopped by the user via Taskmanager.  Norton should start when you start your computer, which you indicated that it is doing.  So why are you attempting to stop it?  I am very unclear on the nature of your issue and what it is you are trying to accomplish and why.  Norton should run automatically with no user interaction.

Re: Cant launch Norton AV 2009

The only processes responsible for NAV 2009 are the two ccSvcHst processes. They cannot be stopped. rundll32 is a seperate process. I also use Norton and I don't have this process listed in Task Manager.

Hello getallittlehalp

If you will look at this site, it will explain to you what rundll32.exe does and how it is used by your computer. I think you will find this site helpful. It says vista, but it also goes into xp.

Re: Cant launch Norton AV 2009

Well Gentleman as much as i'd like to say problem solved it isnt for me and not be able to shut down a failing norton scan operation is disheartening.

The problem was that during a custom scan NAV was "stuck in intializing mode".

Honestly what would be the reason why i couldn't stop a norton exe with taskmanager?

Its my computer i should be able to stop anything/operation i want to on it shouldn't i?

As long as im not violating the EULA i reasonabley think i should have full unfettered

authority over its operating characteristics.

Anyway thanks for your time Gentlemen

Hello getalittlehalp

Are you sure you don't have some malware which is interferring also with the proper running of the program? Some malware can make antivirus programs behave in strange ways also. The problem could also happen if you have more than one real time scanner running at the same time.
