Completely Stumped - Need Assistance with NIS

Here is my current situation:

It just bought a new Gateway/Acer FX6840 tower with Windows 7 Premium 64-bit that had Norton Internet Security pre-installed with a 60-day trial.  Upon initial setup, I had an internet connection.  I did not start or try to activate NIS.  I then started to remove the pre-installed software that I did not want on the PC.  After removing Norton Internet Security, I can no longer get an IP address or connect to the internet.  My removal process consisted of selecting the Uninstall Norton Internet Security option from Norton’s listing in All Programs.  I verified it was gone in Add/Remove programs and restarted the PC.  No connection since…

What I have done to try and correct the issue:

  • Verified able to ping 127.0.0.1
  • Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog
  • Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log
  • Downloaded from another PC the latest Norton Removal Tool, placed on new PC Desktop, and have run in both standard and safe mode.  (I’ve tried every combination of sequence on Resetting WINSOCK & TCP/IP and the Norton Removal Tool with no success.)
  • I even tried restoring the PC to it’s original image, going through the initial setup, but still no access.
  • I then activated the 60-trial NIS that was restored to the system, but it was unable to reach the Symantec servers because there still is no internet connection.
  • I again tried combinations of the Removal tool and resetting WINSOCK & TCP/IP in standard and safe mode.  Still no connection.
  • After scanning this forum, I then downloaded NIS11, copied to new PC and installed.  NIS11 says now 15-day trial, but still have no connection.
  • I have tried turning off the Norton Firewall and going Silent Mode, and running the Norton Removal Tool in both standard and safe mode, but still no connection.

I would GREATLY appreciate any advice that can be provided to restore my ability to get an IP address and get connected to the internet again.  Thanks in advance.

How do you connect to the net?  Have you reset the router, if you have one?  Also recheck the Windows settings for internet connection.

Re: Completely Stumped - Need Assistance with NIS

I connect by DSL through a router, and yes I've reset the router several times.  My current computer is able to connect just fine through the same router.  I have also swapped port connections on the router with both PCs, and the only one having issues is the new PC.  Also all wireless devices (4) configured are working fine.  The Windows settings are also fine.  In the Network & Sharing area of Control Panel it just goes from Identifying Network to Unidentified Network and there is no connection.

Re: Completely Stumped - Need Assistance with NIS

Update to see if anyone has any ideas now...

I have again done a system restore to "as out of the box" condition, and selected to activate NIS10 later.  The issue still persists with "Unidentified Network" in the Network & Sharing section.   After all pre-loaded applications completed their automatic install, the system automatically rebooted.  Still no connection.

  • (As Administrator) Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog and rebooted.  No connection.
  • (As Administrator) Ping 127.0.0.1 successful.
  • (As Administrator) Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log and rebooted.  No connection.
  • Booted in safe mode and reran the two resets above.  No connection.
  • Booted in safe mode with Networking and reran the two resets above.  No connection.
  •

This where I currently sit.  I have access to both PCs and can get and transfer whatever data anyone would need to help troubleshoot this.  I am open to installing/uninstalling whatever version of NIS I need to in order to get this working.  Thanks again, and looking forward to your assistance.

    Hello Opt2Shop_net

What other pre-installed software did you uninstall besides NIS? Have you tried reinstalling your nic card drivers?  Is the system time correct on the new computer. Have you reset the cmos battery?

    Happy New Year !

Make sure your router is set to allow that many devices.

If your restored the system to factory state and still had problems, it's not a norton issue.  I also wouldn't be so quick with resetting the winsock and tcp/ip stack each time.

The system can ping the router, that shows the system can reach the router.

check the ipconfig /all to see if the system has been assigned an internal network address.  (I don't think it is).

If norton has never been turned on, try turning off the windows firewall and make sure the windows network location is being identified as "Home".

Mainly just the Gateway Utilities and MS Works.  This same process the very first time that the system came up out of the box, and the network connection was fine, until I uninstalled NIS.  I just reloaded the NIC drivers with the same "No Connection" results.  The system time in BIOS is correct, and do not see an option to reset the CMOS battery in the BIOS.

Before any I do any other work with NIS10 ver. 17.1.0.19 which is what is currently installed and now activated, where can I retrieve the Product Key?  I want to be able to keep the 60 days worth of trial if the fix requires upgrading.
