Re: Confused re IPS component of Firefox 3.5 toolbar hotfix

Good day Madx,

I imagine the entire Symantec corporate structure and all Symantec employees are cowering with fear because you installed Microsoft Security Essentials.  Anyone recall what happened to Microsoft OneCare?

Microsoft's Hotmail/Live Mail thought so highly of OneCare that they used TrendMicro as their Virus Scanner.

So, now that you have solved your security product dilemma.  Have you solved the unpatched security vulnerability with FF.   Oh!, and now that your a security Guru maybe you can lend a hand to resolving the security vulnerabilities with IE, Adobe and Java just to name a few.

First impressions mean everything....Good Luck with that mantra.

I wouldn't be surprised if Symantec is stalling on this in the hope that people will give up and upgrade to NIS 2010 for piece of mind. This is all fine and well, but  this situation is likely to be repeated and next year we'll be reading about NIS 2010 incompatibility with future versions of Firefox. I suppose Symantec will expect us to sacrifice full functionality, again, until the next version of NIS is released.

I know there will be long-term users of Symantec security programs that will defend them but this is my first time of using one. Not long enough to have developed a loyalty but only to gain a first year impression. I have to say this has been marred somewhat and that the above quote is now my worry too. It seems that effort has been put in for future customers because there isn't a compatibility issue with NIS 2010. The existing ones using NIS 2009 look to have been given second place. Even if a fix is issued tomorrrow for 2009 versions, I don't have confidence this won't happen again. Even though I have a long time to run on NIS 2009, I'm trialing Kaspersky out of sheer frustration and disappointment regarding the situation.

Because I've paid for another 234 days of NIS 2009, I'll probably restore the disk image that has Norton installed if Symantec does bring out an update. It won't be a clear-cut decision whether I'll stick with Symantec at the end of the paid-for period though. Also, if the update doesn't arrive soon, I'll probably just buy Kaspersky rather than upgrade to NIS 2010.

spike53,

Just curious...have you used Kaspersky products.  Have you reviewed Kaspersky Forums.  Have you experienced Kaspersky support.   Why are you with Norton if your such a devotee of Kaspersky.

Just curious...

Re: Confused re IPS component of Firefox 3.5 toolbar hotfix

I knew if I spoke the magic word "Microsoft" on a Norton board I would get a reply, to bad its not the reply about how or when the Norton IPS problem will be fixed in Firefox. Instead I get insulted by a Norton employee surfing the boards as a paying customer. I guess my degree in computer science and 7 years in computer security makes me inferior to the almighty bjm. Nuff said, and good day to you also sir.

miss_fugg,

You hit the nail right on the head....it's a conspiracy...Symantec has made a corporate business decision to piss off all loyal long term Symantec product users knowing they will upgrade to a full release product that is not even available.   2010 is a Public Beta...I can't upgrade to a Public Beta.  I can try a Public Beta product...but, upgrade to a Public Beta.  Not really.

Totally unacceptable....Ten years of apparent satisfactory service fron Symantec.  What is unacceptable.  The lack of progress on this one minor issue.

Totally unacceptable....

Madx,

Thanks for the compliment that I am a Norton employee and also the false assumption that I am posing as a paying customer.

I'm truly impressed by your academic creds and computer experience.   What exactly about my message caused you to feel inferior and to elevate me to almighty stature.

The free and open exchange of thoughts and ideas is what makes us all better for the experience.

I will review my original message and consider how I may express myself better and more palatable.

If your creds and experience are telling you to move on.  You certainly don't need any validation.  I wish you well and all the best.

I offer my apology and beg your forgiveness for any perceived offense.

Sincerely and respectfully

bjm_  alias paying customer

I extend my apology to this Forum et al for any perceived offense.

Dear Angry bjm_,

For someone who isn't a Symantec employee you sure are defending them with lots of venom.

Thanks for the lengthy reply though, your sarcasm is wasted on this forum.

Re: Confused re IPS component of Firefox 3.5 toolbar hotfix

bjm,

If you want to know, at the time I purchased Norton, it was on sale for $20 while Kaspersky was regular $80 and I was out of work. Price won. Kaspersky support is excellent. They remotely found a virus on my old pc which was causing me a lot of grief and they told me exactly how to remove it. I never used their forums before. My room-mate uses Kaspersky and loves it and I will soon convert.

P.S.: You don't need to attack people on the forums like the Norton fanboy you probably are.

Re: Confused re IPS component of Firefox 3.5 toolbar hotfix

I think I understand the outburst bjm. You're saying that the IPS issue is a drop in the ocean compared to the ills of the World? If so, I'd agree. It's just that this thread is about the IPS problem, so that's what gets posted about. I can't speak for others but once an opinion has been expessed here within the parameters of that, I spend much time worrying or talking about all those other aspects of life you mentioned ..and yes they are far more important.
