Continual Security Alert

I keep getting a Security Alert that says "Alert Assistant:  Host Process for Windows Services is attempting to access the Internet. - This program has been modified since it was last used."

It then shows:

PROGRAM - svchost.exe

PATH - C:\Windows\System32

PROTOCOL: UDP (Outbound)

IPv6NAT Traversal - No

It also shows a Date/Time, the Remote Address, and Local Address

Under "What do you want to do?" It shows "Allow always (Recommended).  So I hit OK.  But it just keeps popping up, sometimes twice in a row, very quickly, other times a while apart, and almost always when I first fire up the computer.  It's Windows 7, 64 bit, and I'm the wireless home network.  I've had the computer about 3 wks now, and it just started doing this - though I haven't made any recent changes to it.  I tried using the "virtual help" in Norton support, but that was a bust, and I tried googling the issue, but no luck.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Re: Continual Security Alert

I'm replying to my own post because I'm surprised to find it here in the Tech Outpost, so I want to make it clear that I keep getting a Norton Security Alert, and - well, it's hard to believe this is unrelated to Norton products.  I'm confused.

Hello MaryP,

Which NIS or N360 version do you have on your computer? (Support > About)

It sounds like somehow the Advanced Events Monitoring feature has been turned on and is notifying you of firewall activities.

When the Norton Smart Firewall is set to its default, the Automatic Program Control feature is turned on and you are not notified of normal firewall activities.

Norton 360 • Norton Internet Security • Norton Zone | XP SP3 • Windows 7 Professional SP1 x64

NORTON INTERNET SECURITY, Version 19..0.1.0

I couldn't find the "Advanced Events Monitoring" feature or the Smart Firewall setting and its Automatic Program Control feature.  So I am not sure if they are on or off, or set to default.

Thanks for your reply.

Re: Continual Security Alert

Okay, the most recent version is 19.5.0.145 which should have been delivered through Live Update.

Have you rebooted your machine recently?

Now, to stop these firewall alerts, open the main NIS interface.

Go to Settings > Network > Smart Firewall > Advanced Settings  Configure [+].

In the Advanced Settings window, click ' Default All ' near the bottom and then OK your way out.

Let us know how you do.

Re: Continual Security Alert

I did this, but the problem continues to occur.

I have rebooted several times, with no effect.

Hi Mary,

I am sorry to hear this has not yet been resolved.

Is your Norton NIS 2012 a retail product or did it come as a trial version on your new computer?

Have you been able to update the product to version 19.5.0.145?

Below are screenshots of what the default settings should look like for the Smart Firewall:

Do your settings look like the above images?

Re: Continual Security Alert

Thanks for your efforts.

The frequency of the pop-up alerts has decreased - only once yesterday.  I don't know what to make of it.

The norton product came with my new Lenovo.

I'll look into the upgrade.

So far it hasn't happened at all today - so way down from "constantly."

Not sure what to make of it all, but it is a lot better right now.

My settings are different on the Advanced Settings, as they are all on "off."  But at this point, I hate to mess with it.

Re: Continual Security Alert

Well, OK - it started again.  I had it turned off, and when I turned it back on, the continual pop-ups started again.  Lemme work on that upgrade and on setting the Advanced Settings as you have suggested . . .
