I have been trying to find out just what I should say when I am talking to someone about all viruses, spyware, worms, trojans, bots, keyloggers, malware, rootkits, etc at the same time in these forums. In the past I have called them cyber threats but that sounds old fashioned and I have read posts where people use the term malware for this purpose as well.
What does everyone think? Are we spending our time in these forums trying to rid the world of cyber threats, malware, malicious software, or something else entirely?

A pain in the BUTT or worse is what I think they are really called !!!.......
I still try to understand why people create them and really see what the purpose is for them, all the rootkits for example do they just stop your PC from working or do they do a darker unknown service?? I know some steal your ID,Passwords, but are the majority this way or are they just created to be a pain, inconvinence, time waster?

Hi pexley,
In a public forum like our Norton Community, we mainly discuss and deal with computer security. Like Papuaz said, "Threats" is simply enough to identify all those malicious things which can compromise the security of your computer. But two points to add:
- The severity may be different depending on what you have type of threat you got in the computer.
- The amount of destruction/infection will be less/more depending on the Security program you use.
Like the saying "Prevention is Better than Cure", it's good to have an industry best security program to avoid threats than letting a threat to get into your computer and then try to remove it.No Security programs can guranatee 100% protection over the computer as it is always with in the hands of the users.

Hey thanks guys. I guess "threats" it is.
Every so often when i am wording a post I would need a general term like this when referring to all malicious things as a whole and not just one specific type or severity of threat.

Good choice: "Threats."
Bad choice: "PUPs" (Potentially Unwanted Programs).

Hi Pezley,
You could also call them "security risks" if you wanted to. It's nice sometimes to give posters some context - for instance, if you know they have spyware on their system, then you could call what they have a privacy risk. It just gives them a bit more insight into what's happening, and people tend to be more calm and so on about things when they feel they know exactly whats happening. But generally, 'malware' does refer to all of these things. as the 'mal' stands for malicious and the 'ware' for software, hence 'malicious software' - therefore any software that was created with or for malicious intent - and that covers pretty much anything except, under very specific (and unlikely) circumstances, keyloggers and some types of 'spyware' - like SynchronEyes.
Mo,
I believe that people make malware for various reasons - those being monetary mostly. for instance, there was once an instance of someone programming an application that allowed them to 'catch' all of the money that banks would truncate - in otherwords, the bank would say that you had transferred, say 12% of a certain amount tht came to 12548.364478, but they would infact say that it was 12548.36 - thus the .004478 had been truncated. the program allowed them to catch this and then place it into their own account - they made millions!
I also believe that another reason is simply to prove they can - as a mental exercise or challenge.

Appreciate your reply .Just think of what they could do with that ability if used correctly..
