Difference between the support menu of trial version and retail version in NIS 2012

I am using the trial version of NIS 2012 on a new computer. I noticed that there is difference between the support menu in the main window of the trial version and that of the retail version. In that trial there is not the option to check new version that has been present in the retail version. Is that the right thing or is there a problem?

Re: Difference between the support menu of trial version and retail version in NIS 2012

Hello noghere

I can't see your screen shots yet, but I would guess since it is a trial version, you would have to enter your key and make it the regular program first to see if there was a newer version out. However, that is only to see if the new year version has come out, like NIS 2013. It would not show an update to the NIS 2012 version. The updates for NIS 2012 would come thru live update when they are released.

Since you are using a trial version, please make sure that another security program isn't already installed. Or do you mean that the trial version of NIS 2012 is what came with your  new computer?

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view.

I use a retail version on my old computer (windows XP) and the trial version on the new one (windows 7). The two screenshots are of the two my computers. There is not another security program installed and the trial version works fine.

I recall a Symantec employee pointing that out recently, it's by design.

There is also another small difference, one of the menus has the "activate" option when it's a trial version and that dissapears when it's been activated.  Maybe that one is when you right click the system tray?

You say  that difference is by design. Does that mean when I'll activate the trial version the support menu will be the same as the retail version with the possibility to check a new version?

There is no difference between the trial version and the retail version, they are both the same.

The only difference between your systems is that one is activated and the other is not.

Yes the menu items are slightly different in the activated state, if you activate your trial version the "check for new version" option will appear and the "activate" option will disappear.

Thank you very much for the answer. Are you really sure if I activate my trial version the "check for new version" option will appear ?

I was thinking I'd have to reinstall a retail version instead of to only activate the trial version after 30 days....

Hi,

I can confirm Dave's statements. The versions are the same the difference is in the subscription length. The trial version is only good for a short time. Maybe too short for another version to be released. After it is activated the subscription length will start with 366 days. That counts down from the activation of the first copy and the subscription for all copies on that subscription terminates on the same day.

So, if you have a multiple PC subscription when you activate the trial copy it will have the same number of days to run as your existing copy.

Hope this helps

Yes!  I had the trial version installed and activated it 2 days ago.  After activation, the "check for new version" option appeared on the Support menu.

Thanks nikki605.

When I activate my trial version I let you know if my "check for new version" option appeared on my Support menu.

P.S.: It may be so, because my retail other NIS 2012 version, which has the  "check for new version" option on  Support menu, working on a my old computer was first a trial version that I activated.
