I just bought a new NIS subscription from the Symantec store and haven't used it yet (33 days left on my current subscription). At www.mynortonaccount.com, the new purchase shows "Not Activated" in the expiration date column. Does anyone know if the new subscription's timer is already ticking, or will it only start once I have entered the product key into NIS?

Hi MellonCollie:
Use the remaining subscription until a couple of days prior to expiration. (The new one has been purchased but not activated.)
Then enter the new NIS key under "renew" on the main GUI. At that point your new subscription will be activated for another 365 days.
Hope this answers your question. ![]()

The countdown should only start when you activate using the key that came with the product you bought and if you activate before your old subscription is nearly expired (say a couple of days before in case anything needs sorting out) then it wipes out those unexpired days -- however all the reports we get tell us the Support is great at adding them back in.
When you buy/renew a subscription then the purchased time is added to unexpired time.
If you aren't sure which you did -- renew or buy -- I'd suggest you contact the Norton OnLine Support Team via the CHAT route as below and ask them to check and tell you.
To contact customer support Click on this link and work on from there. You may have to scroll down to see the CHAT button or you will end back here!
Please let us know how you get on .... I had to change my chat link since my old one did not work properly.

Hi Hugh,
Thanks for the clarification! ![]()
If I buy a NIS 2012 at retail and plug in the new key, I lose the couple of days unless I contact Customer Support.
Why can't they do the same thing automatically, in this case, so I don't need to be bothered?
Thanks,

Don't ask me; I don't run the show -- just count your blessings that Support is so helpful in doing things like this for users.

Thanks for the info guys/gals. I bought a new subscription, so I'll wait until my current one expires. Usually I start shopping around for a cheap subscription when my current one is about to expire, but I saw a discount deal that allowed me to get 1 year (3 PCs) for £12.99 from the Norton store so I jumped on it.

Glad to see that the UK is offering that cut too -- I just found it here on line for $47.99 so you got a much better deal !
Folks -- check Products and Services on the new bar at the top of the screen here in the forums and or the Download link and on the Download for N 360 scroll down to the bottom and that price is linked to there .... much better than Renew for the moment.
