Re: Does NIS (2011) automatically scan when a flash drive is inserted?

Thanks all. No longer concerned with how IS handles flash drives, as it appears I am protected in several ways by NIS
Hurrah!!!

Send of Jive, perhaps you can read this below sand give me feedback?

But, in my haste to make sure I had the proper disable autorun fix from Microsoft, and the error worry about not having kb 950582, I may have made a horrible error : (
I had googled microsoft 950582 and it took me to this microsoft site
How to disable autorun
support. microsoft .com/kb/967715
well about 1/4 down the page, there was a "Fixit for me" Disable autorun (fix it 50471)
Like an idiot, I clicked this fix, agreed and installed the fix.
Now I'm concerned that I installed an older fix and may have screwed up the already disabled auto run

I now fear I ruined everything and have put my system in Danger

The Fix-it tool was an earlier way to disable Autorun, and I think it disables the feature for all drives, including CD/DVD drives.  I don't think the tool has any effect on the newer patch, but I am not positive (as you've discovered, Microsoft had made a complete mess of Autorun policy enforcement and sorting through all the documentation is not for the feint of heart).  If CD/DVD autorun has been disabled and you prefer to keep it, try running the complementary Fix-it tool that undoes the change made by the first one.  Then check your Autorun options in Vista to make sure that all are disabled except for CD/DVD drive.  I don't think you've done any great harm.

Re: Does NIS (2011) automatically scan when a flash drive is inserted?

Hi Calls,

Is the computer you are not seeing this on Windows Vista? Just want to be sure because for Windows 7 KB971029 is not required or needed since auto-run is disabled by default.

See: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_other-windows_update/is-there-an-install-fo...

If this is on a computer with one of the applicable OS's shown in the KB article and you still don't see it you can download the update manually.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen

Please double-check to verify that you don't have it installed:

  1.  Open Windows Update > View Update History
  2.  In the 'Review your update history' window, click on the Name column to sort the update names alphabetically.
  3.  The name of the update you are looking for is 'Update for Windows Vista (KB971029)', installed in Feb 2011.

On another note, the 'Scan drives results' entries your saw in your Scan History are the result of a manually initiated drive scan. If you run a 'Drive Scan' from the Custom Scan window, a 'Scan drives results' item will be written to the Security History when the drive scan completes.

Re: Does NIS (2011) automatically scan when a flash drive is inserted?

thanks all. I indeed do have the kb971029 and did get it Feb 2011

as far as flash drive scans, I do see these listed as both scan drive results and as Custom scan results. so confused as to why the sometimes log as one and sometimes as the other
