If you mean that use of the Norton Removal Tool is highly recommended I don't believe that is the case by Norton Staff -- I've seen many posts that the NRT is intended for use if normal removal -- Uninstall in the Norton menu or Remove Programs in Windows -- fails.

The big danger is that people will start it without realizing that it removes all Norton programs you may have installed -- not just the one you want to get rid of.

But it gives you a warning and all the Products N.R.T. Removes; some text is even in red!  How you can miss this, I do not know; you need to click "Next >" to make this warning go away so it is always there until "Next >" is clicked.  And then it does give you another warning just when you are about to un-install all Norton products so symantec give you two warnings; if you Fail to notice these, then who else can you blame?

I have not seen that specified. I don't suppose it does any harm but I would imagine that the version being installed is told to trigger exactly the same uninstall module -- unwise or whatever they use -- as a regular uninstall.

It's a while since I ran NRT myself and I do not remember what actually happens but I stand by what I said -- I've seen too many incidents where warnings starting the user in their face, mine included, have pressed a button and then said " ## ###".

I can think of one incident a long time ago when Norton Protected Recycle bin saved my bacon by recovering all my ~files deleted by Cleansweep which did not know that a file management program used ~ as part of its file names -- that they weren't temp files. This was back when normal recovery from recycle involved guessing the first letter of the real filename ...

I warn people of what NRT does just as Norton itself does -- whether they pay attention is their problem.

I finally downloaded NIS 2008 on my daughter's computer........so far, everything is running very smoothly.  Again, thank you to all of you who gave great advice!  I truly appreciate all of your help and comments. 

If I run into any problems, I will definitely be back here at the forum.  I may also stop by occasionally, just to learn some things about internet security issues.  Thanks!

Good news -- keep it that way!

Great idea to keep an eye open here and when NIS 2009 come out to consider upgrading to that since it's free while your 2008 subscription is still running. But as always, if what you have is doing all you want then don't rush <g>

A few tips:

~ If you have Automatic LiveUpdate On, make sure it is Running on Express Mode, that way, it will install all Updates; will propmt you first should an Update Require a Re-start.  Also make sure you set A.LU to Run every Two Hours; if you have A.LU Off, Manually Run LiveUpdate every Few Hours.  Start > Control Panel > Symantec LiveUpdate.

~ Run Full System Scans at least twice-a-week, e.g. Tuesday and Saturday.

~ Turn On Crimeware Protection.  Open Norton Program > N.I.S. tab > Stettings > Transaction Security.

Are you sure there is not an exception to this -- I think we have been told that Liveupdate does not install the large major "engine" upgrades because of the time it takes to download the very large files and the hit on performance when this happens.

I think we have asked for a pop-up announcing that there is such an update but that we have to download it deliberately
