Emails not being received properly since new installation of Norton

I had Norton Internet Security 2011 and it was working fine. I installed a new version of 2012 recently, and now many of my incoming emails have the attachments removed and the text of the message is gibberish. Any suggestions on what I need to do in order for my email to function properly? I use Outlook and Windows 7. Thanks in advance.

Welcome,

Is this the only problem that you are experiencing? What is your opoerating system and service pack? How did you install NIS2012?

Thanks

Re: Emails not being received properly since new installation of Norton

Hi Dick... thanks for responding. I am running Windows 7  64-bit; I thought I had SP1, but just checked and I don't see it, so maybe not. I am not having any other issues except this sudden email problem. Everything was fine until I installed NIS via CD purchased at Sam's Club. Jill

Hi Jill,

The service pack is critical. Both for the opereating system and your Norton software. Please make time soonest to download it and get your operating system up to date.

I don't think that the source of your CD is the problem.

Hope this helps. Please report back with your results. We'll be here when you need us.

Re: Emails not being received properly since new installation of Norton

OK, SP1 properly installed, however, it has not solved the problem. Rebooted, etc, but the attachments are still being stripped.

In most cases (this is an email I sent to myself, so I know how it went out) I had attached both a .doc (509kb) and .pdf (332kb) of a flyer. When the email was received in my inbox, the attachment showed as just 88kb with no extension. When I click on the 88kb, I get the message: "You should only open attachments from a trustworthy source". It asks if I want to open it and when I click on "open", it says: "This file cannot be previewed. Try opening it in the program in which it was created."

Of course, if this was not an email I had sent myself, I wouldn't know what program was associated with it.

Am I beyond help???

Hi,

If you are still breathing yo are not beyond help! Now that you have SP1 installed and have verified that all of the W7 updates have been downloaded and installed that part of the equation should be good. If the email problem is the only problem I'm going to concentrate there.

Which version of Outlook are you using? Have you gone directly to your ISP email site and verified that the emails are correct there? Are you using the x32 version or the x64 version of Outlook?

One thing you might try is the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool found here:

http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20110217171332EN

You won't be without protection during the process but that will insure that your copy is clean and isn't being tainted by the previous version. Make sure it's current by running live update until the program tells you that all of the updates have been downloaded and installed.

Looking forward to reading about the results :smileyhappy:

Re: Emails not being received properly since new installation of Norton

Hi Dick,

OK, all updates have been installed.

My Outlook says it is 2007 (12.0.6607.1000) SP3 MSO

I have an x64 based PC... I don't know if that means my Outlook is x64. How do I check?

I have sent myself an email of the type with which I have been having trouble. I then went to my webmail and at that point on Yahoo, the entire message was intact, including the 2 attachements. However, by the time it actually got into my Outlook, the attachments were gone and the info I gave you in my 2-21-2012 06:39 a.m. message was what I received.

I have not yet done an uninstall/reinstall. That's sort of my last resort before I go spend more $$ on a different security software.

I really appreciate all your time and help!
