Engine\17.7.0.12\uistub.exe Unspecified Error

Hi everyone,

How are you?

Just to let you know i purchased a brand new Toshiba Laptop with Windows 7 Home Edition. After the first install procedures are done. I run the Norton Internet Security Trail for a month i think and everything went just fine, the QuickScan, LiveUpdate and the rest of the features worked perfectly. Mind you i did this on the 16th of this month (10 days ago).

We had some problems with the Trail Versions of MS Office so my mum decided to System Restore a couple times. Getting to the point i'm not sure whether that affected Norton in any way? This morning (26th) i was trying to login to Msn and it said that your Firewall is not allowing Msn to access the internet.

Upon reading on the msn help forum, it said you allow msn access to the internet via your Firewall which in this case was Norton. Now when i click on QuickScan or LiveUpdate it comes up with the Unspecified Error. Upon downloading and running the Norton Update Center it said "No Norton product was found..."

I was going to download the Norton Uninstall Program but saw that it was 89MB and I'm on dail-up because i exceeded the download limit. I also tried restarting the Computer but the same error shows up. I am even not able to Uninstall Norton Internet Security using Add and Remove Programs.

Any advice on how to solve this problem would be great.

Much appreciated in advance,

Gavin :)

The best bet to solve this problem is to reinstall Norton internet security completely, using Norton removal tool to cleanup any remains. To download any files, you can go to an internet cafe/friends house to download the required files and copy them to a usb stick.

Re: Engine\17.7.0.12\uistub.exe Unspecified Error

Follow the below steps to reinstall Norton. Skip backing up identity safe and uninstalling Norton via add or remove if you cannot perform the steps. You can download the files to a usb stick or any removal storage device to transfer the files mentioned in the steps below:

Please NOTE that this removes ALL Symantec products so be sure to have your license keys ready as you will need to reinstall all your Symantec software products. You can get your Norton product key from your Norton Account.

  1. Download the Norton Removal Tool as well as the Norton Internet Security Installation file to the desktop so that it can be easily found later

  2. Physically disconnect your self from the internet. That could include removing the ethernet cable/telephone cable from the back of your computer/turning off your wireless with either the wireless switch on your computer or turning off your router.  This is to prevent any cyber attacks while you are vulnerable.  DO NOT RECONNECT UNTIL MENTIONED!
  3. Back up any identity safe data:

  4. Uninstall the Norton software through the add/remove programs and let your computer reboot.

  5. Upon reboot, run the Norton Removal tool installed earlier.  Upon completion, let your computer to reboot or reboot manually.

  6. Repeat step 4 two more times just to be sure.

  7. Run the Norton Internet Security 2011 installation file downloaded in step 1.  If you are using Windows Vista and above, right click the installation file and select run as adminstrator (as shown in the screenshot below).

  8. Upon the completion of the installation, reconnect your internet.  Then run liveupdate repeatedly until all upgrades are complete.  You may delete the files you downloaded in step 1.

To restore identity safe data

  1. Create a new identity safe profile.
  2. Then Open up the Norton GUI and click on settings.
  3. Click on web settings and then restore identity safe data.
  4. restore.png

  5. Click on yes.

  6.  icon.png

  7. Browse to the location of the .npm file you saved.
  8. backup.png

  9. Click ok on all the menus.

Also, did you have any security programs before using Norton?

Re: Engine\17.7.0.12\uistub.exe Unspecified Error

Not really Tywin, i mean it is a new Laptop so there shouldn't be a problem. Now i am having problems downloading the Removal tool. i cannot access the link they give me, it says the webpage is not available. ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe (I think its because it starts with ftp but i'm not sure) Should i try downloading the Tool from a website other than through Norton?

Re: Engine\17.7.0.12\uistub.exe Unspecified Error

It may cause a problem when Norton removal tool is run. Please uninstall pc checkup as well before running the removal tool. Based on what I've read of pc checkup, it can be reinstalled again at any time. Do you have any roxio cd burner softwares? We've had cases when running the removal tool can cause the software from running properly and required a full reinstallation. It seemed to be a one off case but prepared to reinstall the software if you have it. Also, in the mean time, please refrain from using the internet until you've fixed the problem. Its obvious the system restore has corrupted Norton, somehow, and its not running properly. You are not fully protected and is now a sitting duck for malware.

Re: Engine\17.7.0.12\uistub.exe Unspecified Error

Hi Gavin21,

You could also undo the last System Restore operation.  The fact that you mention having done more than one restore though, adds a bit of uncertainlty about whether undoing the most recent would solve anything.  If things get too unwieldy you could revert the entire system back to the state it was in when you first got it if there is a System Recovery partition on the Toshiba.  You would lose anything that you have put on the machine since you acquired it, so it would be necessary to first backup this data to an external drive or CD/DVD to preserve it.  But that's the one luxury of having a brand new PC - there shouldn't be a lot of accumulated data to backup.
