Hello coriander,
You didn't mention which Norton product and version you have, but unfortunately, the next step is to uninstall and then reinstall your NIS / NAV product.
You can accomplish this with one tool, the Norton Remove & Reinstall tool.
"The Norton Remove & Reinstall tool uninstalls all Norton products from your computer, and reinstalls the latest version of your Norton security product."
First, Back up your Identity Safe Data to a convenient location and have your product key handy as a precaution.
Then proceed to this page and follow the instructions for downloading and running the tool.
Let us know how you do.
Norton 360 • Norton Internet Security • Norton Zone | XP SP3 • Windows 7 Professional SP1 x64
• PLEASE, BACKUP or EXPORT your Identity Safe Data on a regular basis •

Many thanks for your rapid response, the product is Norton AntiVirus 2011.
Do I get rid of it and start again as you suggested.
It is only a few months old, what went wrong?
Have disc to reinstall or does one download from Norton.

It is difficult to say what may have gone wrong.
You do not need the CD nor the Norton Removal Tool; just use the Norton Remove & Reinstall tool I mentioned. That will uninstall and then re-install the product automatically.
Since you are using NAV, you do not have to concern yourself with backing up Identity Safe.
And please delete that version of the Norton Removal Tool from your desktop. It is very old and if ever required, you can always download the latest version of the Norton Removal Tool here .

All is well now, bit of a marathon but that is my very slow connection. Thank for your advice Phil.
Tried to uninstall old removal tool but it is not listed where the uninstall would take place.
Not much use just putting it in recycle bin as that is only the icon, the prog. sits there wasting
space. Any more ideas?

Okay, so you are confirming that your NAV 2011 is running well now, correct?
The Norton Removal Tool is an on-demand application which never gets installed onto your machine, so you will not find an entry in Add-Remove Programs or Programs and Features.
What you are seeing on your desktop is the full NRT application, not a shortcut. (Confirm that by right clicking and checking Properties)
Delete it from your desktop and it will be gone.

Thanks again Phil, NAV 2011 is back to normal. Old removal tool is in the bin, wasn't sure about the icon/shortcut
what would happen if it was deleted or binned, thanks for that info. also.

Nothing would happen. Just get rid of it permanently. As I mentioned that is an older removal tool and might cause issues.
The Norton Removal Tool is constantly being updated. The current version as of today is File Version 2012.0.0.19.
If it's in the recycle bin, empty the Recycle Bin.
