Error 8504, 100

I have just purchased Norton Security  2012 at a mall computer shop.  My old Norton Antivirus has just expired. I followed the insturctions for installing very carefully. When it was finally installed, i clicked the option for EXPLORE. Nothing happened. After a few minutes, a Norton Autofix came up and it stated that Norton Internet Security has encountered Error 8504,100. I  clicked Open Support Website as suggested followed all the suggestions, downloaded NRnR and then restarted my computer. Well, guess what, it's still the same. I keep encountering the same thing over and over again even after the 4th restart. Please help me.

Re: Error 8504, 100

Hi,

please try these steps:

1. If you use the feature, please backup your Identity Safe data
2. Download latest Norton Internet Security installer from here (this is the English one, for other languages please go to the Norton Update Center and select manual product selectoion + change the language on the site's top: www.norton.com/nuc )
3. Download Norton Removal Tool: www.norton.com/nrt
4. Disconnect from internet
5. Remove Norton Internet Security from Start Menu or from Control Panel -> Add or Remove programs
6. Reboot
7. Run the Norton Removal Tool, reboot (repeat it 2-3 times)
8. Install Norton Internet Security 2012 with the previously downloaded installer
9. Reconnect to the internet
10. Activate it with your old serial
11. Run Live Update until you get no new updates
12. Restore your Identity Safe data

You can check how the Norton Removal Tool works in this video.

Let us know the results.

Hi There

Always good to know that you're not alone!

After aexperiencingthe same problem, and not getting a successful solution with either the NRT or the RNR (remove and reinstall) tools, I'm curious to know if you have had any success with the extended solution provided in the first reply.

BTW, as I am typing this, anotehr error message has just popped up on my screen. This time for 8504, 104!

Hi icy:

Welcome to the Norton forum:

I noticed that you said you have NIS v. 19.1.1.3.  The latest version of NIS is v. 19.2.0.10 so you should try to re-boot your PC and run manual LiveUpdates until all available updates (except pulse updates) have been installed.  This may require multiple re-boots, and if that doesn't work please see the Symantec support article here titled Error: "8504,104" Appears on my Norton 2012 Product for some additional troubleshooting steps.

The instructions for a clean re-install provided by PapauZ in message # 2 almost always fix the problem because they include two important steps not included when you use Symantec's Norton Remove and Reinstall process - the initial uninstall from the Control Panel and re-boot (step 5) and the multiple wipes with the Norton Removal Tool with a re-boot between each wipe (step 7).

I say "almost always" because in some instances the Norton re-install can be corrupted if the user is running security software from another manufacturer (e.g. McAfee, AVG, Spybot Search & Destroy, etc.) in real-time protection mode at the same time as their Norton product, or if there are residual registry entries and/or files left on their computer from an old security software installation (see here for more details).  If you've had security software from another manufacturer installed on your computer post back with the product name and version and we can provide special instructions for wiping this software off your system if you need to perform a clean re-install.

Re: Error 8504, 100

Thank you imacri & PapauZ

This solution seems to have worked for me.

Another important part: follow point 11 ( run Liveupdate with multiple reboots)
