Error 8504,101 Liveupdate NIS engine update failed to complete

Did a Manual Liveupdate, yesterday. It had a few updates; one was "NIS engine". Let the updates download and install. Got "Re-boot Now or Re-boot Later". Re-booted. Windows XP (Sp3) Desktop was missing the NIS 2012 System Tray icon. I went to try to start from NIS icon on Desktop. Nothing. Went to Start/All programs and ran Liveupdate. Found the "NIS engine" and a Pulse update. Error 8504,101. Failed to complete "NIS engine". FIX didn't work. Page brought to after said Nothing about this particular error.  NIS System Tray icon was now there. Looked like it was running. Re-booted. Tried again. Same.

Looked thru forums for "NIS engine" messages. Found one that said to try Intelligent Updater. Did that. NO errors. Re-ran Liveupdate. Came up with same updates (with engine). Failed to complete.

Re-booted. Tried again. Same.

Is there a MANUAL update file, for the NIS Engine update?

Am I going to be told to UNINSTALL AND REINSTALL??????

NIS 2012 looks like it is still working..

Re: Error 8504,101 Liveupdate NIS engine update failed to complete

Hi Mark

Welcome to the forums. Please Run a scan with Norton Power eraser(remove the include rootkit scan check mark in settings) and let us know of its findings(do not fix anything until you get a green signal from here).

It looks like a reinstall might be necessary.

Start by backing up any Identity Safe data.

Download and run the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool found here

Run LiveUpdate manually many times, rebooting as necessary, until there are no more updates available.

Import your Identity Safe Data.

Let us know if this helps.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Identity Safe data.

Re: Error 8504,101 Liveupdate NIS engine update failed to complete

Pwr_erase1.gifPwr_erase2.gif

14 items found. Got to check on them.

Inserting 2 GIF screen-captures of Norton Power Eraser results.

Got to check winruns, and some other utils, to see where the setup.exe, in Startup, is showing. Didn't see that under Regedit/.../CurrentVersion/run.

Hmm....

Fastnet99.exe, ry7b6294.sys, rpaedit.exe, bootship.exe.

wpsg32.dll - "unknown"

civilizationv.exe - I Do have Civ5 (and Civ4). How would Power Eraser repair this?

ry7b6294.sys might be from my cell-phone util.

Re: Error 8504,101 Liveupdate NIS engine update failed to complete

different things are causing 8504,101 error codes.  see gorpy1, garawa, and my previous post.  there is a bug in nis2012 causing this so no need to run power eraser.  my belief anyway. have you gotten your issue resolved?

Re: Error 8504,101 Liveupdate NIS engine update failed to complete

Not yet. Needed my computer for a couple of days. Now I think I might have time to do an Uninstall and Reinstall of NIS. Wish that problems with NIS could be fixed, maybe, with a Liveupdate PATCH??  Or a Manual patch??

Hi markfr,

Here is the Norton suggested method of repairing the 8504,101 error.

I believe Peteweb suggested it, but do not see if you have tried it or not.

Re: Error 8504,101 Liveupdate NIS engine update failed to complete

Just finished off the Uninstall/Re-install tool.  Manual Liveupdate run. Re-boot. Up to new 19.7 NIS version. Did a few more Liveupdates, till said it didn't have any more. Firefox (12) now has Norton Toolbar back. Seems to be working.

Now to re-install Norton Utilities 15.  Then, will run a Full scan.

Still would have loved to NOT have to do uninstalls.
