I had 2010 version and was upgrading to 2011.
by running the start.exe from the disk i got this error.
Error 8504, 104 - Will Not Initialize
the solution was easy after i knew it. no uninstall or reinstall. no time at all.
just click the renew button in the 2010 software put the key from the new disk in to my current version.
in seconds i was updated.

It would seem that the 2011 install has failed but that your new activation key has been accepted. Could you provide the information about the version number you have by going to the Help/Support Menu and clicking on About - there should be a string of numbers there like 18.5.0.125
