Was working fine yesterday and just got on today and norton wont load and get this error. Norton Autofix didn't work. Even followed instructions from: https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp
I downloaded and ran the Norton Remove & Reinstall Tool but didn't work, so had to do it manually. After I did that reinstalled Norton AntiVirus 2012 and still got same error.

Hi ds760 & CBHird,
Thanks for alerting us to this error. I've sent you both a private message (the yellow envelope in the upper right-hand corner of the forums) requesting additional technical information.
Can you both explain in a bit more detail the circumstances that you see this issue? Is it when you launch NIS? When you navigate to a certain part of the product? When you launch another program? Any details would greatly help us try to reproduce the problem. Thanks.

NAV usually loads when I log in, and today I logged in and see that NAV icon is not at the bottom right corner where it usually is. So I try to run NAV as admin by right clicking the NAV short-cut on my desktop. Few minutes later I get an error message.

Same error with Internet Security 2012
Vista Home Premium 32
Working perfectly fine at shutdown last night, error message came up when it tried to open this morning. Autofix did nothing, remove and reinstall tool told me to do it manually, (the normal removal tool gives me page not found errors). Uninstalled and reinstalled and got the blue screen on reboot. Had to system restore to 2 days ago and now I have no norton product (I see it but it says it's not there)

About an hour ago, my Norton Internet Security 2012 alerted me, saying that my computer was at risk and that my Sonar Advance Protection was turned off, I tried to fix it using the "Auto Fix" but when I restarted my computer to see if it worked, Norton would'n't even start up or open. I kept on getting Error "8506,422" messages, but when Norton tried to fix it, it always ended up failing.
Afterwards, I tried to use the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool but it didn't work and told me:
"Could not gather details about the installed layout or license. Click Here for information on how to uninstall and reinstall your Norton product manually." And if I double-click on the icon on my desktop, I would get a popup telling me that it is not a valid Win32 application.
So now, I have no idea on what to do to resolve this issue, any help is appreciated.

I have the same problem, unresolved by following the recommended Norton Removal and Reinstall tool. Preferring to avoid the drudgery of a manual removal / reinstall which seems to be an all-too-common feature of Norton products these days, I successfully restored from a recent Acronis image.
I ran LiveUpdate to update virus definitions, all seemed fine for about 10 minutes then I got the 8506.422 error again - I can't link it to any particular activity on the machine or action taken by me.
What does the error indicate? And is my machine still protected (although the Norton icon has disappeared from the taskbar)?

I also had this happen right after the 10 microsoft updates 08/14/2012. After rebooting after updates my norton icon was gone. This is a conflict between the os updates and norton. I reloaded norton 2012 Internet Sec from website. still got error, couldn't get online. I used Norton removel tool before each try. Reloaded from CD same error. Started getting blue screen just after rebooting and norton loaded. Had to boot into safe mode and do system restore. Than everything ran without problem with norton but without updates.
I had ran mem and ckdsk, all cpu dia without error.
I then removed norton, loaded Charters F- Secure, loaded 10 microsoft updates everything now runs ok, I won't be reloading Norton's for a while.
I'm running Vista 32bit fully updated on XPS-420, Norton was fully updated.

Hi,
I'm experiencing the exact same symptom, but on Windows XP. It started after I installed yesterday's Microsoft patches.
I've tried the Norton removal tool, but as soon as I re-install, I get the same error, and I can't even connect to the Internet.
Help appreciated in advance.
Cheers,
