Free upgrade offer - Bogus or not?

Hi,

I've just received an un-solicited offer fron Symantec to update from Internet Security 2009 to Internet Security 2010 FOR FREE!

Now, no-one gives anything away for nothing and we've all been warned about trusting e-mails from banks and such.

I would like to know if this is a genuine offer or it's a trap from someone pretending to be Symantec.

Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

Jackie

Hi Jhooper

Welcome to the Norton Forum

If you have a current license for NIS, you can update to the new NIS 2010 for free. You can use NIS 2010 until your license expires Just copy down your key to put into the new version. If you upgrade to the new version, I would uninstall it with add/remove, and then use the removal tool to avoid any problems with a install over the top of the old program.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view.

As floplot said, as a Norton 2009 user, you are eligible for a free NIS 2010 upgrade since you have a current subscription. You can update to NIS 2010 via the Norton Update Center over here:

http://updatecenter.norton.com/

The Norton Removal Tool is usually recommended if the over-install is glitchy/unclean. The traditional and most frequently used method is to upgrade via the Norton Update Center :-)

Re: Free upgrade offer - Bogus or not?

Hi jhooper,

Anyone with a current subscription of a 2005 or newer norton product can upgrade to the most recent version of their product for free.

However, I for one would be cautious of this message. How did you receive it (i.e. email, pop-up on your computer, banner ad, etc)? It may or may not be a legitimate advertisement/offer, so in this case I would advice either using common sense as to whether or not it looks legit, or, install NIS2010 on your own and then plug in your current product key.

If you choose the latter of those two options there are ironically two ways of doing just that. You can keep NIS2009 on your computer and install NIS2010 over it via this link. Theoretically the upgrade should be flawless, but due to several issues reported in the forums about these kinds of upgrades I would recommend uninstalling NIS2009 via add/remove programs first, running the norton removal tool (available here)  once or twice, and then installing NIS2010.

Hope this helps!
